definitely thrift shops - here in chicago we also have a ton of recycled clothing stores (with better selections than thrift shops, but not as high end as most consignment shops). i especially love thrift shops for unique and vintage chic housewares. in terms of stores - the usual suspects in no particular order: Nordstrom Rack, Target, TJ Maxx/Marshalls, and DSW. Nordstrom Rack is great for bras and business clothes, TJ Maxx/Marshalls for trendier on season items, DSW for shoes, and Target for well, everything else. But i try to hit the thrift shops and recycled clothings shops first -for both frugal and environmental reasons.

  • Bensbargains.net: More of a portal than a store so I don't know that it counts, but this site is my go-to for tech deals. It notifies you via RSS of any sales and quite often provides coupons codes for a variety of stores. I was able to pick up a Sony MP3 player for a $50 discount with a combination of a sale, free shipping, and coupon code at sonystyle.com. I also found a sale on shelving at Staples.com, netting me five 7' shelves for a total of $120. Probably doesn't count though *sigh*.
  • Bestbuy.com: My husband scours the weekly ads for the $4-10 dvd deals and any video games that might be on sale; sometimes they offer free shipping with that, otherwise he simply does an in-store pickup.
  • Bamm.com: I scour the bargain bin on occasion to check for any novels on our "want" list; best overall price we've found for books with a $10/year membership (which, if you buy books, you earn back very quickly).
  • Kohls: Affordable and decent looking clothing; can be fad-ish. Excellent sales.
  • TJ Maxx/Ross/Tuesday Morning/Rugged: Very hit or miss "one off" stores for name brand clothing and other miscellaneous kitchen/household items at excellent price reductions. These are the stores where you go to browse for good deals, but not to find something specific (beyond "I need new jeans"). You can easily get into trouble if you can't curb your spending because every aisle usually features 50% or more price reductions. Good "garage sale" fix (but I might be the only person who needs that...).
  • Amazon.com: Their Gold Box deals can save you a good bit of money (we use it on occasion for video games) and their grocery section has some decent prices on bulk items (they have better prices with free shipping and better selection than our local small grocery store or the local Sam's Club).
  • Ferret.com: We order all of our ferret food and litter through this website because they have both better prices and a better selection than our local Petsmart (which only has half a teeny island display devoted to ferrets). We also ordered our ferret cage and playpen through this site, as they had the best price plus shipping for them both. They also have frequent sales on items throughout their store.

I do about 99% of my shopping online and my favorite stores are:
  • Amazon.com - stuff for the house, movies and books. The free supersaver shipping is great. We have their credit card that earns 3 points for each dollar spent at Amazon.com and 1 point everywhere else. When you reach 2,500 points, they automatically mail you a $25 gift certificate.
  • Overstock.com - I shop there a couple of times a year for things for the house, books and movies too (some of their media prices are better than Amazon.com). Flat rate shipping $2.95 regardless of size of order even furniture.
  • BargainBunch.com - cute shabby chic style furniture and home decor items for a good price. Free shipping on orders over $39.
  • Costco.com - mostly for office supplies. I also bought a great Suzuki student violin for $170 there last fall.
  • SyFabrics.com - the best source for fabulously priced quality fabrics like velvet, satin, fleece (for our sewing business).
  • Joann.com - for fabrics and supplies for our sewing business. They often have promotions and sales with free shipping for orders over $35.
  • Fabric.com - for fabrics for our sewing business. Better prices when Joann.com isn't having a sale.

Target is the most convenient for me. I am sure Marshall's is nice too, though.

In addition to local thrift stores, I like Kohl's best.

I went into Kohl's in early May and bought four new shirts, a pair of jeans and a rather nice bra for around $40. Today I bought two new pairs of fancy dress shoes for $18. I always go when the seasons are changing, and when they are having those fabulous 80% off sales. I love the clearance racks. With a lot of these stores, it's all about the timing.

I was at Marshall's earlier today, and I also frequent Nordstrom Rack and a few local thrift stores...

I don't live anywhere near a large city, so I tend to shop locally. I love all kinds of thrift shops. Other than that, I do quite a bit of bargain shopping at Target, Walmart, and online (like LandsEnd and Kohls).

When I am in the metro area, I enjoy Marshalls, TJ Max and Kohls. It's hard to resist all the great deals!
