Reputation: | Let me preface this comment with a quick acknowledgement: I realize I am undermining the US economy by shopping at Big Box stores. I shop local businesses whenever possible, but for "everyday items," I favor box stores for their competitive pricing and the ability to one-stop-shop. I have a tendency every few weeks to take a stroll through several bargain stores to see what deep-discounts they might have that meet my current "needs" list. I like Marshalls, Big Lots, and Ocean State Job Lots, all of whom often have Brand Name merchandise for a fraction of the usual cost. I have found discounts as much as 90% from the retail pricing for items marked "slightly irregular," though I have yet to see any irregularities in anything I've purchased. The only caveat with browsing the stores regularly is that I have to be careful not to buy stuff that I don't need just because of the discount. Once I've hit the discount stores, I usually move on to Walmart, the evil empire that undermines the local economy and drains the American Value system, that happens to have mastered the concepts of capitalism and established a profitable business model. |

Reputation: | I have a Marshalls near my house, so it is the most convenient. But I will head to the Off 5th, Nordstrom Rack or Loehmans if I can, they have some great deals |

Reputation: | Where I live we have limited store choices, unless you want to drive 20 minutes (which sort of defeats the point of getting a bargain), so I would have to say our local thrift stores is the best place to get a bargain. This is especially true for baby and kid gear, clothing and bedding. Beyond that there is a Super Walmart that has great value for your dollar, brand name or store brand. Yet I agree with mydebtquest, from previous experience, great deals can be found at Marshalls (which seems to have nicer quality and cleaner stores than Ross), Big Lots and even the 99cent store. |

Reputation: | As far as chain stores, I like Marshall's, Ross and Nordstrom Rack. If we had a Loehmann's in Portland, I'd be there, too. I like DSW for shoes, and for local shopping, I go to thrift stores and consignment shops. My local Goodwill is pretty awesome -- it's surprisingly organized for a thrift store, and all the racks are arranged by color. |
