I forgot to mention in the first post that Trader Joe's has Charles Shaw - also known as Two Buck Chuck for $2 (hence the nickname) but some TJs and other stores sell it for $3. When I want a cheap wine fix, that's what I get.

Another type of (cheap) wine that isnt half bad (when you factor price) is Double Dog Dare Chardonnay. Its $4 a bottle and a very easy to drink wine.

For a good Merlot ($6 a bottle which is a bit pricery but still cheaper in the wine world) Buffalo Grove Merlot is my bottle of choice (when I am trying to get something on the cheap for a non special day)

Default I've had pleasure from bottles at all price points.

The very best wines are expensive. But not all expensive wines are the best.

I just had lunch with a $15 bottle of Burgundy from the Macon region. Excellent value.

I poured down the drain a very dear bottle of Chambertin Clos de Beze which was corked. Terrible value.

My goal is to develop a taste for quality, then frugally look for that taste in as cheap a package as possible.

In all seriousness though, in other countries such as Europe, wine is not associated with money and prestige the way it is here. Many people drink cheap "table" wine for non-special occasians.

Europe isn't a country.

I went back to HI this summer and, having resolved that I was NOT going to spend the entire vacation drinking Bud Light, Coors Light, and Miller Light with the family, split a box of shiraz my cousin and I found at Target. It was surprisingly good.

Now -- I am a beer snob who doesn't drink wine often, so it's very possible that I just don't know any better. My cousin, however, is from California and IS a bit of a wine snob, and she enjoyed it too. The only regret we had was drinking the majority of the box in one night. Ouch.

We've bought the Oak Leaf wine many times. It comes in Shiraz, merlot, pinot grigio, chardonnay, white zinfandel, and many more. I've been very satisfied with it. It all tasted great, comprable to more expensive wines, in my opinion. And if you're pouring everyone's glass in the kitchen and bringing it to the dining room...I bet nobody will ever know you only paid $2.97 for the bottle!

Weird sidenote: I was feeling a little "blue" a few months ago and drank an entire bottle of the oak leaf shiraz all by myself over the course of an evening. The next day I broke out all over my back. So, unless you want back acne...keep things light, lol.
