Question camera recommendations

so... it's been nearly a month since i was mugged, and i've still not replaced my camera. i was pretty set on a canon sd630, but then the camera store guy told me they're coming out with a new line, and so i held off.

then, someone suggested i get an SLR. it's a bigger expense, and i have no formal photographic training, but considering all the food photography i do, and the cookbook i plan to get published on a shoestring... it makes sense.

at this point, as is evidenced by the janky Palm photos on the onigiri post, my indecision is becoming a major liability.

so.... does anyone have any suggestions on an entry-level digital SLR that strikes the balance between cost and quality? i'm totally at a loss and any wisdom would be greatly appreciated. thanks all!

Tasteful food photography howto

I'm a total camera idiot, but I'll share my opinions anyway. I think the point-and-shoot Canon SD line is fine.

Would you really lug around a huge SLR?

PS: the phone camera photos look just fine! Then again, they are relatively low-res, and you probably need much higher res for the book.

A professional photographer told me once that he always buys his cameras at Costco because they have such a great return policy (no questions asked, no time limitations).

So he is able to really try out different cameras before settling down with the one camera he likes.

I heard recently Costco is cracking down a bit on their return policy with respect to TVs and computer items, but I'm not sure whether they are also making camera returns mores restrictive. You might consider checking that out, though.

thanks for all the good advice. between yesterday and today my camera plans changed, as a friend lent me a 7.2 megapixel sony point-shoot indefinitely (!!!)... so i'm gonna hold off, at least until i get a publisher and all that.

but greg, thanks for that link -- great reading. and here's another, that links to a bunch of others, if anyone's interested.
