Default Is Filing State Income Tax Mandatory?

Clearly a question from someone new to the wonderful world of taxes. I've already filed my federal income tax, but I lived in two seperate states last year and made the majority of my income in one that doesn't have state income tax. My predicament is a little sticky. My main question however, is filing state income taxes mandatory?

Tax software can usually help you figure out whether or not you need to file a state return. Here's a little info for you: http://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools...eturns/article

Okay, so I should file a state return, it's a little late now isn't it?

In most states, yes.

In Texas, no. We don't have a state income tax.

Texas rocks.

Can a file after the fifteenth though? I mean, better late than never sure, but is someone going to track me down if I don't? Will I incure penalties and late fees?

I know that with federal taxes you can file an extension if you need to. I assume most states have the same tax deadline, but I'm not sure about that.

I'm also pretty sure that states offer extensions as well. It's probably best to check your local state website for information on that, I don't want to misinform you.

It would be better to file now than to wait until much later. You wouldn't want the penalties and or fees to multiply. I'd check for an extension just to be safe. Keep them (state) in the loop.

Alright, thanks for the advice. I'll try filing and check for an extension.

Also, the state filing date varies by state. Not all states have a 15 April date.

Well, I was able to completely file in about 20 minutes online through the states website. There didn't seem to be any problem, so hopefully I'm in the clear. Thanks for the help everyone. I'm sure I'll be back again next tax season .
