Default Lakers trade Kwame Brown for Gasol (and Shaq to Phoenix)

Wow.

C-Bynum
PF-Gasol
SF-Odom
SG-Kobe
PG-Fisher

Arguably the Lakers and Celtics now have the best starting 5 in the league. I would love to see a revival of the old rivalry.

I thought Jerry West (is he still at Memphis?) had lost his mind, but this article makes a good case for the trade from Memphis' point of view:

Quote:
I hear you Memphis fans, you don't really feel like giving away your Pau Gasol in a salary dump. But remember, this is a special summer for free agents. There is an attractive crop of players, but more importantly there are very few teams with the cap space to join the bidding. It will be a buyer's market. And Memphis can offer guys like Antawn Jamison and Elton Brand the chance to play alongside star-in-the-making Rudy Gay, as well as Mike Conley, Mike Miller, etc.

The Grizzles (there is no 'i' in grizzle) are freeing up cap room it would seem. They also sent stromile swift to the nets for jason Collins (??). I'm not much of an NBA fan, but this is the only logical explanation I can come up with for the two trades.

Jerry West is no longer in Memphis.

There is a pretty good discussion of the trades here:

Thanks for the link! One of the posters there made a great point:

There has to be another deal that is going to happen. The Grizz don't need Crittendon.
While everyone thinks the Grizzles got completely demolished by this trade, I think in the long term they might come out ok.

I haven't caught a Laker game yet since the trade. I can't wait to see the new line up in action!

And now Shaq goes to Phoenix. Oh the humanity!

Now Shaq finally gets the pass-first superstar point guard he always wanted. This is going to be an interesting season.

Yes, but Shaq doesn't seem like the ideal fit for the Suns run and gun offense. I'm sure they'll find a way to work him into the system though. It'll be interesting to see how that trade works out.
