Default Mistakes/cliches in movies you really hate

In Star Trek, nobody ever runs anywhere on the ship. They always just walk really briskly. There could be a freaking supernova exploding off the port bow and the crew would still be walking.... really .... fast. Dang it, sometimes you got to RUN to save the galaxy.

Oh, and how come the deflector dish can be configured to basically do anything. That thing can be reconfigured to create static warp bubbles, generate worm holes, and bake turkey pot pie.

What about about flawed physics? Cars exploding on impact and weapon sounds in space come to mind.

In Braveheart, there's a battle scene towards the middle of the movie where the two sides are charging at each other. The shots change away from Mel Gibson and back to him a few times. Every time the shot returns to him, he's holding a different weapon. Quite an amazing feat for someone charging down a hill and not having encountered the enemy yet.

I guess I find those mistakes more amusing than annoying. I always get a grin out of that mistake in Braveheart.

Being from the south, I have a HUGE problem with someone using a fake southern accent. Kyra (sp?) Sedgwick in the "Closer" comes to mind. "Hhhhaaaaayyyy, Yyyy'aalllll!" Ugh! Not even close! Not only does it leave me completely unwilling to watch that show, I don't think that I could ever watch a movie with her in it--accent or not. Actors should think about that before they decide to slather on that accent.

I'm sure that other people feel the same way about their own accents (ie. new yorkers, bostonians, canadians, english)

@ Kav122- That is my biggest pet peeve, I'm from N.Ireland and my s/o is Scottish, in movies the accents are always pretty dire. On top of that the characters are usually alcoholics or terrorists.
I hate to ruin anyone's perceptions but in all my life no one has ever said top o' the mornin' to me!

Bad science, espcially aerodynamics, bothers me.
No way Air Force One could turn that tightly in the movie of the same name, near the end.

The formula for cold fusion is basically the process for making table salt...as seen in The Saint?

Many, too many to note in Space Cowboys.

And why does every even mildly futuristic space shuttle have to have winglets? Those are going to do much more harm than good and don't even look cool.

One thing that I wasn't terribly bothered by was the inconsistent behavior of Kevin Bacon's hair in Apollo 13. In a couple of scenes his hair is just long enough that you can tell whether the scene was filmed in the vomit comit (plane that provides short bursts of zero and low g). If his hair was floating a bit, it was an expensive shot. If not, it was filmed on the ground. Most of the rest of that movie was very well done.

The slow clap in every sports movie ever. You know, the one where one person starts clapping really slowly and then others start joining in until there is mad, thunderous applause.

Though really, I just find these funny.

I don't exactly hate this, but we laugh about it all the time:

How the bad guys are always terrible shots. One of our favorite movies are the Horatio Hornblower series. Whenever the good guys encounter any enemy soliders, all the main characters get away unscathed even though they are running just yards in front of the enemy soldiers firing at them, and when the good guys turn around to shoot at the bad guys, they never miss.

But then, we don't really want the protagonists to get killed, so that's a toughie and we just laugh about it.

I critique scripts as part of a writer's forum, and something that chaps my hide is discontinuity - suddenly the guy has a knife, or a wallet, or whatever and I'm thinking, where the heck did that come from?

Last week's LOST was like that. The guys are exploring the wreckage via submarine and one says "Oh, it's Flight 815!" What, did they happen to see a passenger's ticket or the manifest? It's not like they paint flight numbers on the side of the plane!

We have a joke in our house about Star Trek and the "5th ensign". On every different permutation, the four main characters would go somewhere with a nameless, faceless guy - the 5th ensign, who would always get killed.

whenever a guy you had never seen before was in a red shirt, you knew his life expectancy was shorter than the time it took to get to the next commercial break.

Has anyone seen the stormtrooper in star wars that hits his head on the doorway as he is going through?
