Default NuvaRing and Yasmin Birth Control Dangers

I am curious to know if people are following the frequent news reports about injuries and deaths related to using the NuvaRing and Yasmin birth control methods.

The following is an excerpt I recently read about a California woman who suffered horrible injuries using Yasmin:

"Galinis, 39, indicates that she was prescribed Yaz as a means of alleviating pain from premenstrual cramps, and had only been on the drug for four weeks and one day when she had a stroke in June 2008. Galinis was hospitalized for six months, and doctors had to remove a portion of her skull and brain to save her life. As a result, Galinis has virtually no short-term memory, and her I.Q. has dropped to 77, which is borderline mental retardation."

The full article can be found here

This is one of many mortifying articles and reports like this I've read recently. This poor woman and her family. No one should have to suffer like this. It is heartbreaking.

I am curious to know what your thoughts are.

Unfortunately, that's just one of the many side effects that are entirely possibly from hormonal BC. I used to be on Yaz, and that stuff almost killed me. My doctor thinks it shut down my pituitary gland or something. All I know is I had horrible migraines. Right now I'm on NeCon. It's not as effective as Yaz at controlling my cramps (without BC, I was heading towards needing hospitalization every month), but it doesn't give me migraines.

Thank you for your reply. I think many of us have been down that road and by sheer grace haven't suffered the loss many others have. Using the pill to treat cramps is an interesting phenomenon. I had the exact opposite experience -- hormonal BC made my PMS significantly worse (practically disabling) not better. Maybe it depends on the product or the length of time you have been using it. What is interesting is that most popular hormone-based BC's use practically identical formulations. It is all toxic to one degree or another.
Here are more links to interesting articles on birth control if you are interested.

I hope you are well.

While there are many chemicals that women need to be concerned about (pthalates, for example, are endocrine disruptors. Nasty stuff), the pill is the least of our worries. More women have been saved by being on the pill than have died from it. More women will be saved from Guardasil than will ever die from it. For every one of those women that had a poor reaction to Guardasil, how many more have died from HPV? Chemicals are not inherently bad things. If I weren't on the pill, chicken fingers made me ill. A careless waitress with a stray piece of cheese would send me to the hospital. Even if I followed a strict diet, there were three days every month I was bedridden. The pain was so bad that I hallucinated and tried to knock myself unconscious. I think I'll stick with the pill. Yes, I'm a bit passionate about this. As a scientist, medical fear-based mis-information makes me stabby.
