I have both. When I moved here, I didn't realize it was a cell phone black hole. As I have a little boy, I need reliable phone service. The plan was to cancel my cell phone contract last February because things were VERY tight and I couldn't afford it, but a friend of mine added me to his family plan. He said that he didn't feel okay with my driving alone and not having a cell phone. So, I have both, but I only pay for the land line.

We recently went from 1 landline and 2 prepaid cell phones to 1 landline + 3 prepaid phones + husband's cell phone now paid for by employer (son bought his own prepaid and is financing it himself, dau got husband's old prepaid and leftover minutes) for a total of one cellphone per occupant! Our landline is pretty cheap--about $25/mo unlimited local, and we use about $20 of long distance a year on a prepaid card. Husband and I are seriously low-usage phone customers (I use less than 200 minutes a *year* on my cell). Right now we spend about $75/mo all together on phone. It would cost more than that to get a family plan with 3 lines, and we'd have to give up our DirecTiVO, which we love, for some lesser DVR option. So for now, the landline and the prepaid lines seem the way to go for us.

I only have a cell phone. I really don't see the need to have a landline too, since I'm hardly ever at home.
