Megan, I so agree about the DC Metro! My husband used it for the last several years. Even with the employer subsidy, his $5 per day parking bill plus the extra Metro fares cost us a fortune! I'm glad to have gotten away from that, at least for a few years.

I usually take the train into Boston from where I live in Maine. It's 140 miles round trip and costs me about 36$ (a few $'s discount if I key in my AAA card number). If I were to drive in my old clunker it would be about 30 in gas and God knows what to park. I also enjoy having the time to relax and read and in winter not have to worry about the weather. There is no parking charge so that is terrific.

WOW! @ redsoxmaniac!! Do you commute every day or just on Monday and Friday? That is a super long trip! I will never complain about my 15 minute commute ever again!

Shazaam! That is a lot of time and money! I'm curious, if you are willing to share, why you make this choice? Fantastic job and wonderful home? (I'm trying to be optimistic here ) I truly don't know how you do it. My husband did 1 - 1.5 hours each way for several years and while it didn't kill his body, his soul was seriously unhappy.

I will try to refrain from complaining again!

Oh man, I'd give anything to have really good public transport. Local to get to work and regional/cross-country for exploring the nation. I would sell my car in a hot minute.

When I lived out in the suburbs I had to drive 20 minutes just to get close enough to take the light rail into downtown to go to baseball games, museums, and shopping and stuff.

Now that I live closer in, I've discovered that buses don't even run early enough to get to my job in time (I must be to work at 6 am).

Sigh. One day.

I haven't seen the bus come by my area. There is a bus stop though so there has to be a bus route, even if infrequent. Also, someone picked up a Bookcrossing book I left at the bus stop.

I just moved to Chicago on Monday and after dealing with the traffic here, I promptly became a fan of public transportation! I'm still not too keen on the bus, but I like the trains. I plan to definitely utilize public transportation more often than not around here. It's easier, less crazy, and less nerve-wracking!

Although having my car is good for grocery store runs or Target runs. I like having the option if I have to lug a lot of stuff around.

How did I miss this post the first time around?? I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the public transportation system in Portland! It's one of the reasons I moved here. I went from a small town with a-bus-an-hour system to a city where I can hop on the MAX and be downtown in minutes (well, about 20 minutes, 'cause I live pretty far out). There's a 'fareless square' area in the downtown area, so I can hop on a bus and get to work easily.

My employer offers a subsidized TriMet pass, so I pay about $20 a month to be able to ride any MAX, bus, streetcar (yes, we have that too!) or even the new Tram up to OHSU if I want.

p.s. to the person who lived in DC---I spent two years there during graduate school, and also loved the Metro.

After reading all the posts. I should vote Sydney for the one of the worse transport systems around!
