Default Are romantic comedies now directed towards men?

I love John Apatow movies. But the other day my wife said "you know you are watching a romantic comedy right?"

What?

OK after some thought I realized she was right. Movies like Knocked Up and the 40 Year Old Virgin are really romantic comedies. They are told from the inept male perspective and have a lot more dirty jokes, but the heart of Apatow movies are about love and romance.

I've noticed that we don't get much of the Nora Ephron, Meg Ryan kind of movies any more. Other than the Notebook (which I secretly liked but won't admit to anyone, including my wife) we haven't had a real successful chick flick kind of romantic comedy.

Is the chick flick version of romantic comedy dead? Which of the current generation of 20 something stars will step up and replace Meg Ryan?

hello all,
I agree that it would be good to have a Meg Ryan "replacement"-------no notion of who it could be. How about you, any ideas? Did you see the aging Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan summer comedy/musical??

They used Abba Music and some of it was well done, but cheesy in spots too!

Isn't there an old saying in show business that while women will go watch movies men enjoy, men will not do the same for women?

Maybe that's why the so called chick-flicks are dying. If there is a revival I think Amy Adams (Junebug, Enchanted) is the one to bring the genre back.

Huh. Well that explains it. I'm female and I've seen a couple of these Judd Apatow/Seth Rogan movies and absolutely hated them. Thinking of them as romantic comedies from the male point of view explains a LOT!

I agree with Amy Adams. But also check out Isla Fisher who costarred in "Definitely, Maybe." She could easily be the next queen of romantic comedy.

Isla Fisher was great in Wedding Crashers.
