Reputation: | We don't get cable nor do we have much of a social life because we literally live in a desert, so we really have no clue as to what movies have been out in the past couple of years (we live about 40 miles from the closest movie theater). So we like to buy DVDs so we can watch movies over and over. Does anyone have any recommendations for good movies to own on DVD - those that can be enjoyed more than once and not solely plot driven? We love British, period and/or historical films, especially if they have nice costumes, but are open to almost all sorts except horror and action.

Reputation: | Into the Wild was good. Based on the nonfiction book. Wordplay was really good. I like documentaries, and crosswords, so a documentary on crosswords was a double plus. The focus was on the lives/preparation of a few players in the crossword championship tournament, but they also threw in a lot of historical details on crosswords and how they evolved, as well as small snippets from celebrity type players (Jon Stewart, Ken Burns, The Indigo Girls, Mike Mussina, Bill Clinton, Bob Dole, etc). Also a lot from NY Times crossword editor Will Shortz. I have watched it multiple times, which is rare for me and movies. |

Reputation: | I very much enjoyed the recent HBO miniseries "John Adams." It either has been or will soon be released on DVD. I also love classics like Casablanca and High Society.

Reputation: | I greatly enjoy Little Miss Sunshine. It's definitely not for kids, but is a very funny, character driven piece. I've heard similar things about Juno although I haven't seen it. Flushed Away and Wallace And Grommit and the Curse of the Wererabbit, both by Aardman Animation (the former being a blend of traditional and CGI animation, the latter being CGI/claymation), are very funny and incredibly inventive (singing slugs, French frog assasins, cute bunnies, a real dog fight...by dogs, in carnival ride style planes). Amazing Grace was a very well done period piece about William Wilberforce (sp?) and his fight to abolish slavery in England. I tend to watch more television shows on DVD than movies. I prefer the longer form storytelling/muliple year long character development of good television shows rather than the single, event driven movies (even character study movies). I've watched most of the new Battlestar Galactica on DVD (although I'm watching the new episodes on-line now thanks to Hulu) and am currently working my way through the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off Angel. Both are very good series in my opinion, although I know they're not for everyone (and fall into the "not for kids" category, especially Battlestar). |

Reputation: | Marie Antoinette was lovely for costumes especially. On a different note, I loved Waitress... I could watch that more than once.

Reputation: | Check out Netflix.com. Gives a description of the movies and you can rent them for a small fee each month, then send them back. If you like it enough to buy it that's an option too, or you can buy them on your own from some place else.
