Default Site Suggestions

So I was looking for a place to make a thread about suggestions for the site and realized I couldn't find any subforums about the site and not being frugal, lol. Perhaps we could make a wee one so that they don't get swamped in general?

Anyway I was wondering if we could turn off the thing that turns typed links into something cute using the website's description? Some of them are really long and don't actually give the website's name. Or is this something I can change when I post?

When you click "Post Reply", below the text box there is a section called "Additional Options".

One of these options is "Automatically retrieve titles from external links". Uncheck the box, and then post your comment as normal.
Test: http://www.google.com

Unfortunately, this only prevents it from happening to links you post, so it's not very useful.

I wish we could turn it off for other people's links as well. Some of them can be really long and not very useful!

Thanks for pointing it out! I swear I could go to "Post Reply" hundreds of times and not see that.

That's a great idea! We will definitely do this in the future. For now, though, since the speed of the general forum is still fairly slow, we want to keep the discussion here so everyone will have a chance to see it and comment on it. But when the speed of new threads pick up, I think you are right that we need a new forum for suggestions.

Thank you very much for pointing out these forum quirks Purplefdu. I never type in links so I would never have found out about this problem if you didn't bring it up. Thank you so much!

No problem!
Computers, programs, and forums are one of the few things I'm really good at, so I like to help out people with those things whenever I can. ^_^

I still don't understand the quick reply. It always just says

Please click one of the Quick Reply icons in the posts above to activate Quick Reply.
Nothing I click on ever activates anything, so I have to go up and click on the reply button to manually post a reply. There is nothing too quick about it

If you click the icon on the bottom right of the post above the quick reply box (the icon looks like a pencil writing on a piece of paper), it will 'activate' the quick reply box. I agree though, it could be quicker.

If you click on the "quick reply" button, the "quick reply" box on the bottom of the thread is activated. You can immediately reply, and if you click on "quote message in reply" it will also allow you to quote the post that you clicked the button from. I'm using it right now to reply to you.

Oh wow, that is an odd function. Most of the forums I use that have the quick reply don't make you click on a button first before activating the box, so I was completely lost.

Thanks for the explanations 72Tiger and Davoscat.

Jeremy, I understand your frustration. I'm also used to seeing the Quick Reply box automatically activated without need for further action.

I think the reason why we require a click is this:

Quote:
vBulletin instructions: If you enable Quick Reply, a box will appear on the showthread.php page allowing users to reply to the current thread without needing to load the full newreply.php page.

When Quick Reply is enabled, you may specify whether or not users must click the Quick Reply icon in order to start typing in the Quick Reply editor.

If you choose not to require a click, the system will not know to which post a user is replying, making both the threaded and hybrid display modes non-sensical.

We strongly recommend that you set the option to require a click if you use Quick Reply and have Threaded Mode available on your forums.
I'm not sure how "non-sensical" it will get. I don't even know how many people use the threaded and hybrid displays. But let me try it for a few days without requiring the click and see how it goes. Thanks for the suggestion!
