Default Violinist falls, fracturing million-dollar fiddle

It's so tragic. I have a $160 student violin and every time I carry it I'm so paranoid that I'll trip and drop it. If I had a 1772 violin, I don't know if I'd take it anywhere and would probably play it in a padded room - which would totally defeat the purpose of having such a grand instrument.

Well, at least he could afford the $1 million violin and it's insured. That's some comfort, but still a tragedy.

Uf dah. It makes me think about what will happen to the world's great antique violins in the long run.

This spring we'll be shopping for an "advanced student" violin for my son's b-day that I'm hoping will take him the rest of the way through HS. To be filed under the header "even when it seems like it goes in one ear and out the other, they really are listening to you": he tested out an $800 model and a $3,000 model at the shop a couple of months ago, and concluded that while the $3,000 instrument did sound better than the $800 one, "it didn't sound $2,000 better."

It's pretty amazing these days how much better student instruments are getting. I'm a guitarist, and host an open mic night one town over. Pretty frequently, someone will forget their guitar and have to borrow mine. I used to bring my nice Ovation guitar down (no million dollar instrument, but maybe $500 worth), and I'd sit it in the front row and cringe when I loaned it to a real string basher.

Anyway, I picked up $99 cheapo Rogue guitar from Musician's Friend to use there, and it's great. Again, not $500 great, but even 10 years ago, I think a $99 guitar probably would've been basically useless.

If I had a million-dollar violin, I'd be too scared to take it out anywhere. I'd probably get a cheap violin for the actual playing.

Yeah, I think I'd rather have a $950,000 violin, and a $50,000 violin vault. :-)
