Default What is "Reputation"

I went to "my profile" and I noticed that I have 2 "reputations" down at the bottom of the page. They have points attached to them. Sorry to be so slow, but what are these and what are the points and who did I get them from? Can I give someone a reputation?

From what I can tell, it's a way to show that you appreciate someone's post. Like maybe they helped you by finding a page that you were looking for. Or they gave you a really good idea. Or started an interesting topic.

Look under each persons name and you'll see, what looks to me like a cloud...I think if you click on that you add to someone's reputation.

Or, I could be totally wrong and Will will come here and correct me.

COOL! Thanks! But how to I tell who sent me a reputation?

okay, one more question I just added a reputation and it only added 1 point. It looks like I was given points in 10 point increments. How do I do that?

Well having not received any reputation, I cannot say with absolute certainty where you can find it ...

But on other forums that I frequent that use reputation, I could always check to see if I received any, and who I got it from, by going to the User control panel.

Try clicking 'edit profile', and then just scrolling down to 'save'(don't need to change anything). That should take you to the control panel and there might be a small list of people who've given you rep.

[EDIT: Wow, or you could just click 'control panel' to get to it, instead of doing the long route I typed above... I've been posting on forums for years and only just discovered this now. BWAHAHAHA I'm dumb.]

kav...I don't see any place that shows who gave reputation points. I wish it did because I would like to know who did it. Maybe that person could say their name in the comment section when they give points.

As far as increments go...I'm not quite sure about that. It looks like it goes up in increments of 10.

yes, I can see the reputation and the comment with it there, but not who gave it to me....not that it matters

Oh, and I see you have 10 points now! Ask and ye shall receive, right? *It wasn't me* hehe! No, serious!

Yes, I just noticed that. I guess you can go up in increments of one. Interesting.

I like the reputation system. It's a nice way to say thanks! (besides just saying thanks, of course)

Good question Kav! Joanne is correct. Reputation points are a way to show people that you found their comment useful or interesting. It is a way for you to reward positive behavior. Also, if a member gets a ton of negative points, it will also alert the admins regarding a possible troll.

We're still testing the system. Yesterday Greg and I gave out some points to test out the system. Eventually we'll write up an official FAQ. Here are the current settings:

The reputation
  • When you register, you are given 10 points.
  • You must have 25 posts before your points to other people counts for anything.
  • You can only give 10 people points per 24 hour period.
  • You have to give 10 different people reputation points before giving the same person points again (this prevents you from rewarding the same friend again and again).
  • For every 500 posts you make, you get +1 point of reputation altering power.
  • For every 180 days you are a member, you get +1 point of reputation altering power.
  • For every 100 points you get, you get +1 point of reputation altering power.
  • Admins and moderators can give 10 points at a time.

That's suppose to be a "scale" I think.

As noted above, 1 is what everyone start out with, though you can raise your altering power with seniority and getting lots of points.
