Reputation: | Yes, container gardening is absolutely the way to go! Especially for anybody without much space or who might need to move the plants due to weather, relocation, etc. Presuming you're interested mostly in edibles, here's an article that gives a good list of varieties you might want to grow -- along with sources for ordering seeds & plants. The article includes fruits, veggies, and herbs. Given current economic conditions and the scary trend for big corporations to slap patents on seeds, I'd also strongly consider using non-hybrid heirloom varieties so you can, if you wish, save seed. |

Reputation: | We have two big clay pots with an iron trellis on top on our front driveway. They get extremely hot in the afternoon so we have had problems with various plants burning out there. We planted cuke plants that are supposed to put out the small cukes for pickling. They are taking off like crazy. We check them every other day for water and if the rain hasn't kept them wet enough we dump the water out of our dehumidifyer on them. They are starting to climb the trellis and putting out lots of cukes. |

Reputation: | Just remembered this hint: for a good boost to your plants, sprinkle epsom salt on the soil. I just got a case of blossom rot on a couple of my tomato plants, so I was sprinkling the epsom salt on there and I thought "HEY! I don't think anyone has mentioned it on WB!" So there. I don't know exactly what it does (it is magnesium) but it makes all plants (veggies, house plants, etc) green and lush in about 2 days. |

Reputation: | I'd never heard of this before and I"ve been a serious gardener for years. Plus, epsom salts are cheap... All of which goes to show that there's always new stuff to learn AND one of the best places to do that is here at Wise Bread!

Reputation: | Hey, always happy to help. Also a Tums stuck down in the dirt will help with blossom rot, too. But the epsom salt works on houseplants, grass, pretty much anything that grows |
