I have a cat who gets progressively hungrier and thus progressively more annoying as the day goes on. That'll do it.

Plus I just like starting my day. Nothing better than getting all my tasks done before noon and having the rest of my day to myself.

Of course, if it's a workday, then the motivation is to get to work on time.

Usually an alarm clock is enough for me, but if I'm feeling extra tired and get the feeling that I'll be having a little trouble obeying the alarm, I do something different. In addition to my normal alarm clock, I set the alarm on my cell phone and put it across the room. So, my alarm clock serves as a sort of snooze button/warning and the cell phone is the real alarm that takes a little extra effort to turn off.

Have something exciting planned for the next day. I find that such a thing usually gets me up before it's time to wake up. Unfortunately, that doesn't help with waking up to go to work.

I'm normally pretty much a morning person, so it's not terribly difficult for me to get up and get going in the morning. I refuse to use the snooze button and, instead have just taught myself to get out of bed when the alarm goes off. Being happy about getting out of bed in the morning is a bit different. I've found that having a more pleasant alarm helps. I've got an old Sony Dream Machine alarm clock/radio/tape player (said it was old) that has a pleasant beeping, rather than an annoying buzzing. When I switched to the beeping when I was in college, my waking experience became lot more pleasant.

This worked for me:

How to Become an Early Riser

I think it is very well thought out, but would be pretty hard for someone with yound children.

Oh man, I wish I could do that every day. However, I'm usually faced with "Oh. Right. School." Maybe this will work if I make breakfast exciting.

Default Yoga

Do Yoga exercises and mediatation either during evening or morning. That will make your mind and body relax and you will start feeling fresh and will wake up early.

Default the theartre undergrad's no-fail wake-up system

PUT THE PROGRAMMABLE COFFEE POT DIRECTLY BESIDE THE BED. I mean right there by your nose. Set your alarm & coffee to begin simultaneously. Stubborn snoozers can leave the MUG in the KITCHEN. You'll only try to drink from the pot just the one time...

What if someone invented an exploding alarm clock? Nothing gory, maybe it splatters ink or pasta sauce, heh.

Seriously, the best way to wake up is to just jump right out of bed. Just do it without thinking.

For some reason, both my mom and I can usually just program our bodies to wake up at whatever time. I don't have to be work at an exact time, but I'm almost always awake by 7-7:30 without using my alarm (and regardless of what time I go to bed). Just making getting up at a certain time a habit and never deviating (not even on the weekends) helps. Doing some stretching and qigong exercises right after I get help gives me something to look forward to and helps me start off my day on the right foot.

On the other end, it helps to get into a pre-bed time routine that allows you to decompress and start relaxing before going to bed. This routine should ideally start at least 20 minutes before going to bed. I find that if I intentionally give myself time to decompress by meditating, reading something really light, taking a hot bath, stretching, etc., my mind and body will be more receptive to going to sleep. Of course, I don't always give myself this time, which probably explains why I'm mildly sleep deprived.
