Reputation: | I usually have a peek outside if the doorbell goes and I am not actually expecting anyone. If I see a person weilding a clip board, I don't answer the door, if they ring the bell again after seeing me I unplug the bell and just get on with whatever I am doing. It works a treat. |

I did have a rather amusing run in with a state legislator canvassing. He has made some really degrading statements about women to the media and sponsored some legislation I really disagreed with. I politely told him I was voting Democratic across the board this year with a smile on my face. He looked really crestfallen but wanted to continue talking to me. I told him no thanks, again with a smile on my face. There was something a bit cathartic to be able to sort of reject someone that didn't want to listen to his constituents until he was running for reelection. | |

Reputation: | Thankfully we don't get many people selling things that often anymore. We used to get a ton of religious people though. Like 30 of them would walk around which scared me when I was younger. I don't answer the door. I peek out the window though to see who it is. Last week the door rang and it was someone selling something. My brother had been blasting the music and playing his guitar so the guy new we were there and he wouldn't go away. He started yelling up at us through the window to open the door. Some people just don't get the hint! |

Reputation: | It's not nice of me, but with Jehovah's Witnesses, I always stare at them really blankly for a minute and then say "I am sorreee... no... English" while gesticulating towards my mouth. When asked where I am from, I say "Resha". The problem is, they always come back a week later with a Russian translator. |

Reputation: | Why do you feel obligated to answer the door? Everyone I know calls me before coming over to visit. How often do you answer the door after a random doorbell ring, to find someone you actually know? My doorbell is disconnected. I have a motion sensor that sets off a (quiet) alert chime inside the house, to notify me of someone on the front porch. I look at my security camera to see who it is. I never blindly open a door to a stranger...ever. That ship sailed with the days of picking up hitch-hikers. lol Ok, if you want to have some fun... I bought a motion activated sprinkler called "The ScareCrow". It is sold for deterring deer and wild animals. It is available at most hardware stores and costs about $80. Yes, it is expensive. Yes, it is worth every penny in entertainment value. I have it set up so that anyone that crosses a "line" that is 10 feet from the front door sets it off, and gets sprayed with a 5 second burst of water. It is a "blast" watching those pesky salespeople get the "message". I do have a small sign at beginning of my walk warning people. I also informed the mailman, UPS, Amex, etc it is there. (they all think it is a riot!) |

Reputation: | The law is not on your side if the salesperson is abidding by local laws. Your little sign won't stop a door-to-door sales rep. We get paid off commission and if have something that you want and we can't tell you about it because of a stupid sign we lost a sale. So signs on your door on in your lawn are concidered "your personal rules" according to the law and law enforcement can not enforce your rules on the public. |

Reputation: | Have a no solicitors sign and when they knock anyways, as they will, simply point to the sign and close the door. That usually does the trick.
