Question personal development book to get started

Since there's a worse personal development book thread (http://www.wisebread.com/forums/life...-book-749.html)... let's start a "good personal development book" thread.

So Wisebreaders, what is a great personal develpoment book for a newbie? Blogs are good too.

Thanks!

I recently listened to this audiobook borrowed from the public library: "The Personal Efficiency Program: How to Get Organized to Do More Work in Less Time" by Kerry Gleeson.

It's geared towards white collar professionals but I would recommend it to anybody since it reminds people to just get it done right now, saying that over and over like a mantra almost. No excuse, just do what you have to do right now.

I started out with Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective People". My first self help/productivity book. Helped me gain focus and made me realize that I already had the perfect life. (That was like 5 years ago. Things have changed a bit since then.)

Anyways I highly recommend it.

My very first foray into personal development was a couple of articles by Steve Pavlina. The one that said we should not get jobs really made an impact on me.

10 Reasons You Should Never Get a Job

My second foray into personal develpment was reading Getting Things Done. It's a short read and I finished it during the plane rides during a vacation.

I jumped past 7 habits directly to GTD. Now I'm thinking I should go back and read the classics. Thanks for the tip.

I read Choosing Civility by P. M. Forni. I still consider it to be the most valuable book about connecting with other people. How To Make Friends and Influence People a classic and was very good also. But Choosing Civility is succinctly written into simple rules and timeless lessons without the extra anecdotes.

I would recommend first start with blogs & sites. Cheap, a bit of everything and usually lead to book recommendations.
On top of my list, zenhabits.net and lifehack.org
They both have a wide view, plenty of interesting archives and regular posts

+1 for DFANA. One of the most important books ever.

I've read a lot on self-help and self-improvement. Dale Carnegie's books have been around for a long time and are excellent.

My own online booklet 32 Keys, in my signature below, has been online since 1999 and has generated a considerable readership.
