Default What is NLP (neuro linguistic programming)?

A lot of the new self help "gurus" out there are pushing this concept called neuro linguistic programming. Some people make it look like magic.

Others claim it is an effective way to pick up women.

This Wikipedia explanation sounds more scientific, but still kind of vague:
Quote:
When communicating with someone, rather than just listening to and responding to what a person said, NLP aims to also respond to the structure of verbal communication and non-verbal cues
Does anyone here have any experience with NLP? I would like to be more influential when I speak to people. Can NLP help me become more persuasive?

It is sort of related to hypnosis and such. You should read the book Snow Crash if you're interested in science fiction and NLP. It has a good story about how religion is related to NLP.

I took a free NLP introductory seminar in Northern California a few years ago and it was interesting but at the same time it felt like a cult. All these NLP students would try to hard-sell you into enrolling into the expensive NLP classes.

Also, not all NLP courses are the same.

Seems like common sense to me, i.e. reading between the lines, so to speak. I have read, though, that is one area where there is a notable gender difference, with women being better at it than men.

If it's not something that comes natural to you, then I suggest that you save your money and just pay closer attention to things like tone, context, and hand and facial gestures. Try to put yourselves in their shoes. Sometimes mirroring gestures helps you figure out what someone else is feeling -- like how forcing a smile will often lift your mood. Plus, mirroring gestures often puts the other person at ease and makes them feel like you understand.

You can actually practice some of this with good actors on tv. Or, try it on some politicians. Then you'll realize what people mean when they say they just get bad vibes from some or that they're lying through their teeth.

Anthony Robbins' books are a great education about NLP. Also he does not make it look like a cult, or as a system of taking advantage of other people.
