Default Why don't you use gmail?

Lately I've been telling my friends to email me at my Gmail address. I've had the address for a while but I didn't want to or need to move from yahoo mail because I've had the email for over 8 years. But when they put out the new system a few months ago I hated it. That was the final straw. My other gripe is the ton of ads all over the page. Now I don't know how I ever lived without the conversation view. it makes sooo much sense!

If you're not using Gmail yet why not?

I've had my personal yahoo account for 8 years also, and got a Gmail address when I started my blog. I love Gmail! I still have the personal e-mail w/ yahoo though, but I did refuse to upgrade to their new interface. I tried it for about 2 minutes and went back. I've already got the Gmail address that is the same as my yahoo address so I may change one day.

I already have 3 email addresses, so I don't need another. I have had a hotmail account for some time now and have another email address from my ISP. Most people I know have one of those addresses and the other is used when signing up for things on the web.

The other email address I have is from work.

I don't get too much junk mail, so I figure there is not a reason to make the change. I have heard good things about GMail, but don't want to have to check another email account.

Default gmail great, but not perfect

A couple of years ago, I sucked it up and stopped checking both Yahoo and Gmail. I would go back to Yahoo once a month or so, but not much more.

But you know, Gmail is not perfect. For the last month I've been getting emails that are delayed 2-3 days. Anybody else notice issues?

Default I use it but..

I have a verizon account I've had forever, but got a gmail account a few months ago after hearing people rave about it. The plan was to use that as my "forever" account if I ever leave verizon. But I have yet to drink the Kool-aid. I just don't get what is so great about it over Outlook and my verizon account. Any info to enlighten me on what I'm missing would be great.

I've had a Hotmail account for about 10 years. Just got a new computer and it's just easier to use the Hotmail account with Outlook. I use the Google Reader and have heard good things about Gmail--trying to decide whether to stick with Outlook or use something that is web based. I'm not too keen on possibly losing all my info should there be a hard drive failure but a little worried about privacy issues with Google. Any suggestions?

I've always used a web based email program and never really thought about privacy issues.

What kind of privacy issues are you thinking about? Are you afraid google will read your mail?

I've never really thought about it but maybe I'm being naive. I keep reading that we don't really have any privacy anyway....

I love the idea of a "forever" account but judging from this post it sounds like we're all collecting more and more "forever" accounts! 5 years from now, we'll all have 10 forever accounts.

2 things I like about gmail over outlook (which I only use at work):

1. "archive" instead of delete. The message disappears but you can still search for it later. (also it's googlely good search is fast and easy to use.)

2. conversation view. Gmail always groups email threads together which really helps to reduce the number of messages you're looking at at once. It sounds like a small thing but it changed the way I looked at email. Having all the replies to a message already there (but minimized) is really really useful.
