Reputation: | I'm a youthful 56 (I say that only because I've been told I look about 45 [for whatever value that may have] and I'm in relatively good health) and I find myself in the unenviable position of not having any retirement savings. Zero. Zilch. Nothing. Now, here comes the good part; I'm in approximately $900K of debt. 30+ years of too many bad decisions, in laws, outlaws, exes, taxes, failed job/business attempts, divorce, and a 'there's always tomorrow' attitude: here I am. Please don't misunderstand, it's not all been bad, but enough to arrive at where I am today. If you drove by our home, you wouldn't think it. Proof positive: 'All that glitters is not gold!' Why am I sharing this? I'm not looking for abuse (although, I'm sure I'll get my fair share; that's the nature of internet posting, but I can handle it). I not blaming anyone, because in the end it all comes down to me, no matter how the loaf is sliced! Probably because, in some small way, it helps me release some of it as opposed to keeping it inside and perhaps some young person will view this post as sort of a life 'skull and crossbones'. In the words of the late Wilson Pickett (song: 'Ninety Nine and a Half Won't Do'), "Don't be led in the wrong direction!" Anyway, I believe I've got the skill sets to turn this all around, if I can stay healthy and be granted just a little more time. I think ZTD will help in that journey. -looknn51 |

Reputation: | Wow! $900K is indeed a lot of debt for one person. Interest payments on that alone must be huge. It's not too late to turn things around, however. If you have assets, you can sell those to raise money to pay off the debt. You could move to a smaller house or to a rented apartment. You could trade your car for a cheaper used car. Without knowing the rest of your life circumstances, I can't make recommendations beyond the most common ones but I'm sure there are lots of other ways in which you can downsize your lifestyle in order to attack the debt problem. |
