Awhile back (2-3 years ago), I read about car rental companies charging their customers with speeding ticket fines (where the driver was not pulled) based on GPS calculations. I don't think I ever read about a rental company paying a fine and then charging the driver but I suppose it could happen.

Hey, that reminds me of this holiday classic. (Warning: lots of swearing in the video after the jump.)

GPSes are quite scary. My husband recently got one from his parents and it tracks his speed, too. I said to him, "now you're being watched from the sky and they can issue you a speeding ticket anytime!" He wasn't amused.

The maximum fine is not where you get burned. I wish Forbes had done a slideshow of how each state reports their speeding tickets to the Department of Motor Vehicles. In New York, if you plea guilty or are found guilty of a speeding violation, depending on how fast over the speed limit you were going, the State will assess "points" on your license. If you accumulate more than 11 points in 12 months, you forfeit your license for a period of time. Also, there is a widely-spread, unconfirmed rumor that insurance companies will adjust premiums upward 10% for every point on your license.

When we moved from NYC to Florida, we drove. It was me, my husband, my mom, my aunt 9who was staying with my mom for a few weeks), 2 dogs and an iguana...in one car.

We got not one, but two speeding tickets. One in Georgia for $509and one in Florida for $210.

Holy crap I'm glad I don't live in Virginia! I haven't gotten a speeding ticket in a long time, but when I did it was only $100 or traffic school!

Along these same lines, you can get a ticket in another state, pay the additional fine so as to get supervision and "not have it on your record," but then when it is reported to your home state, it is treated the same as a conviction.
