For me, switch to another bank with 0 comissions and charges, plus a small interest yield on the amounts I have there. One of those things I should have done long ago but always had something more urgent...

I cut up my Gap store credit card. That thing is devil spawn. And then I opened up an ING checking account and started a $10 a paycheck savings account.

I set up excel spreadhseets for budgeting a long time ago - I have been doing okay but I always tended to ignore or not investigate what i really needed to know about finances. This is partly the reason I am in the debt I am today This past year, after seeing a family friend pass away unexpectedly and then find out he had no insurance, no retirement/401k and a lot of debt, I decided to get a head start on my 2008 resolutions and decided I needed to educate myself. I have been doing a lot of reading of books and searching onthe internet when I stumbled upon a series of blogs about personal finance. The past few months I have set my self up with an RSS reader to keep on a few of the blogs that I thought were relevant to helping me when I stumbled upon Wise Bread as well. This is a great site. I love the forum so as to get members to help each other and keep each other encouraged as they are making changes to make their financial lives more healthy.

It has been quite an education for me. I now have a plan to eliminate my $45k in debt by the end of 2009.

I look forward to lurking and participating in this forum.

thanks in advance for everyones help and guidance

Me too! I am so much happier now in my new job. And because I'm not miserable, I stopped wasting my money on stuff that I thought I deserved for working so hard at such a crappy job.

Default No fee bank account & RRSP

I switched to a No Fee bank account and I opened up an RRSP (Registered Retirement Savings Account - a tax sheltered retirement savings account in Canada).

My husband and I moved nearer to our jobs. I estimate we save at least 60 dollars a month on gas, which allows us to put extra into our high yield online savings account. Not to mention the time savings.

Best decision I made financially was to pay off my consumer debt! I am still working on it, but am making progress and can see a light at the end of the tunnel!!

I increased my 401(k) deduction amount and set a goal (that I reached) of how much I wanted to have in liquid assets.

Can't wait to see what happens this year.

We sold our ridiculously overpriced home for way too much money (yay!), moved provinces, and bought a house twice the size for half the money. We also paid off all our debts and cut up our credit cards. Now the only debt we have is our mortgage, and it's a very good feeling.

On a more frustrating note, it's really hard to live without a credit card, there's a lot we can't do - like rent a hotel room when we are on holidays, buy things online or buy a plane ticket. Surely there are people other than us in this world that don't use credit cards?
