Default ConsumerReports.org -- worth the subscription?

Hi!

I'm getting into personal budgeting and whatnot, and I ran into Consumer Reports at the book store the other day, so I checked out their website today. The information seems valuable and interesting, and they seem to summarize disparate topics well.

What I want to know is: Is anyone here a [paying] subscriber to ConsumerReports.org? Is it worth the $26/year?

Thanks!

I am a big Consumer Reports fan. Definately worth it.

Check ebay for good deals:

My mom has subscribed to Consumer Reports more often than not the past 30yrs. Its worth it if you buy things often and need the info. Finding a discount on the subscription is normally pretty easy too.

I had the subscription last year for 17$. I found it useful initially and used it frequently for the first 6 months. Later on I found that I was using it only occasionally. So I discontinued after a year. If you are planning big purchases like a car or several appliances, I think it is worth it. You can also go for trial membership for a month and evaluate if it is really useful for you.

My mother has a subscription to the website that my folks, sister, and I all use. I found the website very helpful when I bought a "new" car a year ago, a treadmill, and low price surround sound system to improve the sound on my 20" television. I also use the customer reviews at amazon.com and bestbuy.com to help me decide whether an item is likely to be worth the money.

Nice... thanks, everyone!

Also, you may be interested to know that ConsumerReports has this spin-off magazine - I forget what it's called - that lists deals as well.

Also, I didn't realize that you could buy magazine supscriptions on eBay! How odd and interesting. I'm very wary of eBay, though -- it's always a hassle.

Another option, if you're just interested in Consumer Reports for one or two "big ticket" items, is to check out your local library...most of the articles are very short. So, when I was interested in information on televisions, I just dropped by the library, and photocopied the three pages I needed to make my decision.

That said, they seem to be a high-quality publication, and, after flipping through a few issues, I'm strongly considering a subscription myself.

The library is a great idea! Thanks, Solinvicta!

I was hoping there would be some sort of trial membership, so I was happy when I saw this post, but if a trial membership is possible, I can't figure out how to get it.

Any help moneyman (or anyone else)?

Thanks!

My Dad has been getting a subscription to consumer reports for his xmas present for many years and still likes it. He also now has the online subscription too. It's the only magazine he gets and he still reads it. I find it pretty helpful for looking up electronics reviews, cars, and anything else big.
