Default End of year preparing for taxes

I was going through some medical bills and that reminded me that I need to determine total medical mileage. Since we take the medical expense deduction you can count transit to appointments and such. So what other things could be done ahead of time to get ready to do your taxes?

The bigger question, what things can you do before the end of the year to improve your tax situation?

I don't make much above the poverty line, so I get practically everything back. Last year I DID get everything back. Not really much I can do to improve such an awesome situation.

We normally look at getting together donation receipts/forms as well as estimating laundry costs for my husband's uniforms. We don't really go through much else since we don't go to the doctor/dentist, etc.

What I should be doing is organizing all my receipts, etc. Our taxes are pretty complicated: a rental house, a military member, several small business. I usually try to do them in chunks: one week I'll do the rental house, the next week I'll figure out my freelance business, the following week I'll figure out any other small business stuff.

Of course, I'm pretending that none of it exists until after January 1st because I'm so far behind this December!

- Everyone would like to spend less on taxes. Fortunately, the tax laws make it easy. You can reduce your taxable income through various deductions, or reduce your tax liability through various credits. Here's some suggestions for uncovering the tax breaks that are right for you.
