There's GnuCash: Free Accounting Software | GnuCash
It is open source. I don't know how it compares to Quicken as I haven't used the software myself.

I've just gone back to Excel. It's refreshingly easy after the mess I made of Quicken. A lot more work, but worth 100% control.

I use You Need A Budget. It's not free (I think it was $19.99) but it runs off MS Excel, and I feel keeps you a bit more on your toes than Quicken does, because it anticipates your expenses, rather then simply being reactive to them.

Default MS Money Plus

I recently bought MS Money Plus. It is extremely user friendly without sacrificing overall quality. You can upload your online banking info through the program and it will auto update. There are so may options I can't list them all. It only cost me 22.87 and that small investment has been well worth it.

I'm a long time user of Microsoft Money. I love the various features, including the bill calendar, and the reports that it puts out. I use it a few times a week to automatically track all my spending. It really keeps me honest.

I use Quicken 2008. The "My savings plan" feature is pretty decent to use the envelope budgeting strategy. The monthly cash flow register is also useful to see how you did for the month.

The more I have been using it, the more impressed I am with the features and capabilities of it and I am finding ways around some of the idiosyncracies it has. I highly recommend it.

The issues that I have foud so far to be problematic:
1) You can't use the same citibank login if you have more than 2 credit card accounts, you have to set up separate logins for every 2 accounts.
2) Paypal download sets off an alarm with PayPal and they block your account causing embarrasing moments with the PayPal debit card.
3) My Savings Plan should be able to bulk together subcategories, but as of right now, it can't.

It can be had relatively cheap at Costco.

Oh, I guess I haven't mentioned what I've been using. I currently have Quicken 2007 installed. I upgrade only once every 3 years when they threaten to cut off online services. So the next one for me will be Quicken 2010.
