I use Moneydance for several reasons:
  • Comparable features to Quicken.
  • I primarily use a Mac. The Quicken version on Mac OS is not a great piece of software, especially compared to the Windows version. Moneydance fills the gaps. Microsoft Money not available for Mac OS.
  • I used to use Quicken on a PC. The upgrade path was not pleasant. If I skipped upgrading, it was terribly difficult to update to the latest version without going through some hoops with converting the original data files (same goes for QuickBooks which I still use for business purposes).
  • Moneydance is cross-platform. There are versions for Mac OS, Windows, and Linux. I am happy to know that as I bouce between using Macs and Windows machines, I can use Moneydance on either platform without worry. (I only use it on Mac OS now, but I like the option).
  • $40. I believe that is cheaper than the standard price of Quicken (except when Intuit offers an occassional special offer).

I use Quicken for household finances and Quick Books for our business work. I've never had a problem with either, but I often think I should take one of their courses to be sure I'm getting the best use out of both.
