Reputation: | I was listening to the radio today and the show was talking about having a love drawer in your house. The love drawer is setup in one of your desks that has your will in it, funeral instructions, house papers, titles to cars, investment papers, etc. so if anything happens to you your love one can reach to one place if anything happens to you and have everything he or she needs. Just a thought... but remember I wouldn't have it in an open place (common area) where somebody can go snooping around or if a burglar breaks in and now has access to all your personal information right in one place. Here's a link to an articel on it: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/...n1289988.shtml |

Reputation: | No I haven't, but I think about doing it all the time. I live with my sister (we own a house together) and I'm the one who does all our "administrative" stuff - banking, bills, insurance, taxes, etc. I don't think she even knows how to get on our online banking.

Reputation: | That's a great idea. May I suggest a "love SAFE" instead? It has the same advantages, except that it's fire and burglar resistant. Mark P. Cussen, CFP, CMFC |

| Member | It would have to be a totally hidden drawer in order to make me feel safe enough; instead I use a fire-resistant strong box. Also, did anyone else feel this post was going to be headed in a totally different direction??? |

We have ours in a file cabinet. Importants go on top, bills/receipts go on the bottom. We have been looking at a fire-proof safe though as we do have originals of our marriage certificate and birth certificates we'd like to preserve in case of a fire. We plan on putting them in an Otter box (made for kayaking, boating) which is also waterproof and shatter resistant.

| Member | This is actually a great idea. This will definitely be up for discussion with the wife/family. I have always put certain important documents where I am able to find them. However, in case of an emergency, I would want my loved ones to know the location. I will be sure to make this a priority.

Reputation: | Not living with anyone so I don't need a love drawer. However, all my important documents are in a safe deposit box at the bank. |

Reputation: | That sounds like a great idea. I would definitely go with a safe rather than a drawer though. |

Reputation: | I should do this (drawer with key papers); I have a file cabinet but it is not necessarily secure and it would take a while to find things. My in-laws have their stuff in a safe deposit box; my father-in-law's instruction to my mother-in-law: when he dies, don't tell anyone (not sure if family is included or excluded here) but go to the box and get all the papers b/c the bank might refuse to allow her access without him, which will now be impossible. He's very practical, quite the investor, and (rightly) not terribly trusting of the wisdom of bankers. |
