Default Hidden costs of the holiday.

Hidden costs of the holiday – those things that you wouldn’t think of factoring into your expenses but will eat into your costs nonetheless. These hidden costs include:
1. Holiday meals/gifts for hosts
2. Holiday cards/wrapping paper
3. Holiday travel (airfare, hotel, gas)
4. Holiday decorations
5. Shipping/postage
6. Clothing/holiday party outfit
7. Electricity for holiday lights
8. Additional childcare/pet sitting
9. Charitable contributions
10.BONUS Gift for yourself – but only if you can afford it!

Wow. Awesome article. It's not about what you pay other people, it's about how much you spend passively without even noticing it.

I found I can avoid all costs, hidden or otherwise, by simply not spending anything during the holidays. I have a strict "no spend" policy between Thanksgiving and the New Year.

great tips. Shipping costs is a big one. I often overlook that one when I am considering my budget.

Great article! Wrapping paper and bows always kill me; I don't budget for them but I always want to have pretty gifts!

Great article. I did a similar post recently at The Paycheck Chronicles but I completely forgot extra utilities - and I always see a jump on my January bill. And I didn't add a line for charitable contributions, which I definitely need to put in.

Once again, you've got a great site. I always learn something when I visit.

We never buy anything for the holidays that year other than gifts leading up to before turkey day. Paper, bows, even gift wrap tape and dispensers are bought on clearance at minimum 50% off, normally 75-90% off.
