Default Holiday tipping guide

What are the appropriate tipping rates for various services? My family doesn't have a tradition of tipping so I never learned about this while growing up. Help!

A lot of service workers rely on tips. It is important to be especially generous during the holiday season.
  • Housekeeper: 1 week's pay
  • Trash collectors: $20 and up
  • Gardener: $50
  • Babysitter: one night's pay
  • Daycare people: $80
  • Doormen: $25 for everyone, $100 for your favorite
  • Super: $100-200 based on how good he was
  • Hairdresser: cost of one cut
  • Personal trainer: cost of one session
  • Dog sitter: one session's pay
  • Mail carrier, UPS, Fedex: $20, $40 if you get lots of mail or packages.
  • Paper boy: $20

No tipping experience? Are you from Canada? No offence, I just know a lot of Canadians.
Anyway, I couldn't really help you out with this. I'm from Hawaii and it's completely different here.
Mailmen and garbage men usually just get beer.
Gardeners, doormen, etc., We don't have them.

-lol- don't bad mouth our crazy Canadian neighbors.

A lot of cultures don't practice tipping to the same extent we do.

It depends on your relationship with your hair dresser. I'm pretty close with mine so I actually got her a very nice gift basket. Personal gifts like that are more appreciated than cash I think.

Definitely. I always splurge a bit on people who help put me together (I'm like the bionic woman). A nice thoughtful gift is a must if you ever want to book an appointment without getting bumped.

It isn't just cultural differences. There are a lot of variation just within the united states itself. I live in Southern California and we don't generally tip our bag boys (at least I've never seen people do it). But I think bag boys do get tipped at other parts of the country.

You mean a bag boy, like in the grocery store? I've never heard of tipping for someone to bag your groceries. Unless you're talking about asking someone to carry your groceries to the car for you? That I could see, though I always feel awkward about asking someone to do that for me, so I never ask.
