I opened an account with HSBC mostly so I could open up an offshore account once I saved up enough.

Bankrate is where I would start looking for a bank that fits my needs. You also have to remember how some of these banks can offer you high interest rates and that is by either being a large bank (ex: HSBC) or not having any brick and mortar locations (ex: ING). You could be sacrificing customer service at a large bank and convenience at an online bank so you have to weigh your options. Just something to think about...

Are off-shore accounts FDIC insured? Anybody knows about this?

That's not really a concern at this point. I'm actually doing it in the anticipation that the FDIC will eventually go bankrupt itself.

I've had an ING account for about three years now and haven't had any problems. The user interface is easy and getting data is never an issue. I recommend it

Thank you all for your helpful comments!
I guess being able to make a deposit is what's really important, as well as being able to withdraw my $$ after it's reached my goal amount. I don't really want/need an ATM card; as this defeats my purpose.
A lot to think about...especially in light of the current economic situation of the U.S.

Thanks for the link! I'm not totally sure I want/need an ATM card or checks, as I do not want to withdraw until I've reached my goal savings. It is however, nice to have this option available though.

Also, a good point was made in the comment section highlighting thefact that ING does not offer checks or an atm card.

If you plan to have a checkings and a savings accoung don't you think it makes sense to have them at the same bank.

good luck

I use ING and I love it. I have never had any problems with it and I highly suggest you get it for a savings account. Withdrawing is not so difficult. You can simply link it with your checking account provider. (For me this is Wells Fargo)

Personally I prefer different accounts between checking and savings as this helps prevent me from dipping in the savings account when I want to treat myself.
