Default I don't make enough to save money.

This is what one of my friends told me this past weekend.

Haha what a typical US consumer comment.

I have so many thoughts about this, but basically, it is so common and also so sad.

"Will you buy me an iPod?"

Priceless.

What a conversation. It must be difficult to deal with that with any kind of regularity. A lot of people have a hard time going on a budget because a budget doesn't really sound that fun. Maybe see if you can get her to at least give herself a limit on unnecessary spending while reminding her it doesn't have to be cut out entirely.

Some people really don't make enough to save money but that does not sound like the case here and it usually isn't. I was able to save a decent chunk of money last year despite making less than $15k. You don't have to make a lot to be able to save money.

Agreed. It's all in a smart budget and self-discipline.

Live on less that you make... honestly, anybody can do it. I'm convinced of it. Scale back your lifestyle to match your income.

I have been so strapped there was nothing left to save. In our younger days we were scraping everything we could together just to pay rent and buy some basic groceries. There literally wasn't anything left. I see people all the time that are that broke. I also see people who are broke and are making some really bad choices.

I really have no clue how to get anything through to someone so disconnected from reality that they feel the need to borrow money to go buy an iPod.
