Reputation: | diamonds aren't rare unless they're huge. they're just price regulated and cleverly marketed to make the consumer drool over them...plus making you feel like a cheapskate if you don't buy one. if you don't believe me, try buying an ordinary diamond ring and then reselling it. you'd be better off getting the scrap value for the gold setting and tossing the diamond down the toilet bowl. Why not a fake diamond, like diamonique or some other brand? just don't get one of those 8 carat fake geegaws. it's like hanging a sign from your ring finger that says, "this is a fake, because on my income, there's no way in the world I could afford a real diamond this big!" Better yet, take that $1,000.00 and put it in an IRA or towards a down payment on a house. In 20 years you'll be glad you did. |

Reputation: | I think this is one of those things that a couple should discuss. Some women would be appalled by a fake diamond, and some women would be appalled by a real one. I would personally want something unique and real (not a created stone), but not necessarily a diamond. I'd like to do something for my fiance at the same time, though--put a down payment on a house or buy a new gadget. |

Reputation: | If your/her heart is set on diamonds I believe there is a place here in the states where you can mine your own. I watched a show recently on the Travel Channel where you can go mine your own. There was a man who shows up every day, he makes his living off of the small diamonds he finds. |

As bad as it sounds, pawn shops are the way to go on diamonds. Bring somebody along who knows what they are looking at, and you can save a fortune. By the way, I read somewhere not too long back about man made diamonds coming on the market that will be indistinguishable from natural diamonds. Made from a carbon with pressure, just like the real thing, only made to order - no mining involved. I am sure deboers (sp?) will counter with certificates of authenticity or some such, but the heyday days of the diamond are coming to an end. | |

Reputation: | Why not give the finger to the DeBeers marketing campaign that made every potential bride feel she "needed" something that she did just fine without? I mean, really? What enlightened woman wants a mini-shackle around her finger? |

Reputation: | Diamonds have never been good investment vessels. Lucky for me my wife hates jewelry in general so all she has is a wedding band and she doesn't even wear that ever since her fingers got swollen during the first pregnancy. Here is a great oldie but goodie article about diamonds: Have You Ever Tried to Sell a Diamond? And here is a more current but just as entertaining article: The Diamond Myth I just can't see anyone buying a diamond reading these articles...... |
