| Senior Member | I started a plain savings account at ING a year ago and have been happy with them so far. At the time, the APY was more competitive at 3% but it has since gone down to 2.5%. I have a "totally free" checking account through 5/3 bank which allows me to have completely free transfers between my ING and savings. Transfers can take up a week to clear (though mine usually do in about 3 days) so if you think you'd need money quicker, then it may not be for you. Deposits are FDIC insured up to $250,000. |

Reputation: | I've been with ING (US) for years and have never had any trouble at all. I have a checking account with Smith Barney/Citigroup and have transferred money back and forth every month without any issues at all. ING is a large world-wide bank with offices in many cities. Your mom may be worried after reading about all the people who lost money in the Icelandic online banks but ING is a different story. I've never heard of ING freezing anyone's account and it would seem to me to be a relatively easy thing to fix with a simple phone call. |
