I would definitely agree with your point that "keeping up with the joneses" is a big reason we're in the housing crisis now. Many people confused the amount that they could get with the amount they could afford. Even after the housing market collapsed, my fiance and I were preapproved for a loan that was way more than we could actually pay on a monthly basis. I definitely don't think all the blame goes to home buyers though.

I'm all for living like a millionaire in 2009. We have a lot of savings goals for this year, so we will need to live frugally to achieve them.

I love your article. I'm fortunate that I live in an area where people aren't too interested in showing off their stuff, so the pressure to keep up isn't as high. In fact, I've trained myself to think that the people who are flashy probably DON'T have any money.
