Reputation: | I have an online high interest savings acct with ShoreBank, and I'm really excited about my money being a part of their organization. They're rock solid (yes, even in this economy), they help build local neighborhoods, and they always consider the environment when funding a new project. Does anybody else have a financial institution with similar ideals that they'd like to share? |

| Senior Member | My actual bank has similar ideals. They are still somewhat local (although branching regionally), donate money to local groups once a year based on member's votes (which allow for a write in) as well as give to several other causes. Most of the locations are built using green or environmentally friendly materials where possible. And they have moved to offer more member services with their new free checking (free AAA membership, no ATM fees internationally, and free checks). They also call to check spending while being discrete when your husband buys an expensive anniversary present but you answer instead.

Reputation: | I wonder if there is a website that lists and rates banks based on how much they contribute to the community. All things being equal, I would of course prefer to send my money to a bank that is looking out for my neighborhood instead of one that is gambling money on some mysterious derivatives market. |

Reputation: | Finding a bank that you are proud of can be difficult but also extremely refreshing. Interest in community development and environmental projects can set a bank on a completely different level from their competitors and gain respect from consumers. |

Reputation: | That is so true. I looked for over two years before I found a good bank.
