Thanks for the info guys! All of you Americans are making me jealous, your cards are infinitely better than ours for rewards haha!

Right now I use PenFed Platinium.

5% cash back on gas
2% cash back on groceries
1.25% cash back on everything else.

The cash back is credited to my statement each month when I get the bill.

I average about $50 per month cash back.

I use Citi Platinum Dividend card for most of my purchases - they give you (I think) 2% on groceries, drug store puchases, convenience stores etc, 1% everywhere else.

For gas purchases ONLY, I use the Discover Gas card which gives 5%

My normal card is a simple rewards card (Chase Amazon.com Visa), but I use a Discover card to take advantage of their 5% cashback promotions.

I use a Discover Card for most purchases, and an Amazon.com Visa for all my Amazon purchases (love Amazon Prime!). Amazon is offering 3% back right now on grocery, dining, gas & department stores (once you get over $450 in a month in these combined categories). I've been using this since it started in April, but surprisingly I haven't hit the $450 threshold in a month yet.

Default cashback shopping through Discover?

I use my Discover card (and usually take the reward in a gift certificate to get another $5 back or so), but I recently went through their shopping link to get 10% at Barnes & Noble.com (for a mother's day present). Does it really take 8 weeks to be posted? Does anyone else do this on a regular basis? It's double dipping for sure, the cashback refund plus the 1% cashback.

This all depends on you.

If:
  1. You can view your charges as no different than spending cash (money you actually have in the bank),
  2. You can control your spending,
  3. You can pay your bills on time and in full each month, and
  4. You you want/need to build credit,
then, yes it might not be a bad idea to get one, because if you can use it responsibly, you can earn cash back as well as earn interest in your bank account. Depending on your bill due dates, paying for purchases and bills with a credit card can allow you to keep all that money in the bank (and earning interest) for as many as 6 weeks longer than if you were to pay in cash or check.

For more info on how and why I used credit cards, check out a couple of my blog posts:

Amex Costco Card - 1% back on Costco (only use it there since they don't take anything else.).

Citi Shell card - 6% back on gas from Shell (only use it for gas, you can get other cards, like BP or Exxon. I got Shell because it's 1 block from my house and use it all the time).

Chase Amazon: 3% back on Amazon purchases (only use it at Amazon).

Chase Freedom: 3% back on most used purchases, 1% on everything else. (use it for "everything else" that doesn't fit on the above cards).

Edit: I have all on automatic payments. Every month it automatically pays off entire balance from my checking account.

Edit2: I also have a Discover, but don't use them much any more - even with their 5% promotions. Their cashback rules are "to complicated" for my everyday use. I try to keep it simple with only those 4 cards.
