My husband is in the military and therefore his salary is public record...heck, Congress gets to decide each year. What I find most interesting is how different people make different choices with the same amount of money.

My salary is pretty well known amongst my friends and family, but that is because I work for an hourly wage and it sometimes comes up, as vacations, etc. result in lost wages and I can pick up extra hours to cover certain extra expenses.

I'll pretty much share my salary with anyone. I used to be an independent IT Consultant and found out what to ask for by knowing what others made. As I made more and more I found that friends in the same job were making much less because they didn't know the potential so I started telling people they were selling themselves short and shared my info so they knew it was possible to get more. A friend of mine recently started a new contract and because of our discussions she asked for more than she had ever dreamed of and they gave it to her without hesitation. She called me up laughing and screaming, thanking me for letting her know it was possible.

No one. Are we supposed to? I thought it was supposed to be kept secret? Plus there is so much social taboo about discussing what people make. And no one really reveals everything right? What are you going to say I make $150k but I have $150k in student loans to match it?

Or I make commission so I never know if i am going to make $2k or $10k?

if someone asks me, I don't really have problems telling them--and it's definitely NOT because I make a lot. It just never seemed like something that really needed to be kept a secret to me

I also don't mind sharing if I am asked. However if it is someone that I work with, I generally keep that private.

We don't really share it with anyone. Obviously our bosses are aware. My mother has a general idea, but I don't think my dh's family has a clue.

My husband, boss, and the IRS all know how much I make. I think I told one couple that asked outright how much my base salary was, and mentioned to a friend and her husband once that my husband can literally make in one day what it takes me 1/2 a month to make (now THAT actually is disheartening...). Otherwise, I don't discuss income or expenses.

I was recently shocked to learn that a former co-worker only made $10,000 more per year than I did - I figured it was more like $20,000 more, since he had better qualifications, more experience, and he was able to charge more for his work.
