Default Who has actually used their emergency fund? Tell us about it!

I got this from another forum I belong to.

Have you used your emergency fund recently? Why?

I haven't. It's actually higher than normal now because I set aside more cash to pay my taxes and estimated taxes.

We did but it was a few years ago. My husband got a surprise layoff from a job. Our emergency fund was enough to get us through until he found a new job without much stress. You never realize how great an emergency fund really is until you get in a pinch.

We had to use part of it. We had some car repairs that absolutely had to be done in order to keep the car running. Our car is ten years old and has almost 200 thousand miles on it so it was a necessity. We also used some of for the down payment on our son's orthodontic device.

We haven't had to use one since establishing it thank goodness. Fortunately with our cats getting sick and needing longer than expected treatment we had the cash on hand to take care of it.

We definitely need a house maintenance fund though...

I had to dip into mine a few years ago after being laid-off due to 9/11. I was able to survive with savings and income I made from selling used books on Amazon.

We have an emergency fund for income that we have never touched. We did use our emergency home repair fund last winter when we had to put in a new furnace. Being able to give the guy a check right away got the furnace in a lot quicker!

When I first started having an emergency fund I didn't have a very good budget. I needed it to get my clunker to pass inspection. After that I rebuilt it more slowly because then I also changed my budget to include monthly payments to a "car fund" and such.

I'm pretty lucky to have not had to have had to delve into mine, so luckily it's growing at a healthy rate!

Late last year we had a string of unfortunate events take place that required the use of some emergency savings. Our furnace broke down, our water softener broke, and had to replace tires on one of the cars. It put a bit of a dent in the account having everything happen within the span of a month, but that's what it's there for.
