Getting Your Greens on the Road: How to Eat Well While Traveling
Summer is in full force and you’re ready to hit the travel trails. You’ve got the time; you’ve saved the money; and you’ve picked the spot. You’ve also worked hard to stay healthy this year and you don’t want to ruin your health with too many rich foods. You’d rather nosh on the green goods. So where do you find them when you’re rolling from hotel to hotel and city to city?
Cook It Up in Your Hotel or Hostel
If you’re on the road and floating through a few hostels, chances are good that you’ve got a place to concoct a healthy dish or two. Take full advantage of the facilities available in your spot. If you’re worried about food disappearing, as it sometimes does, shop for stuff right before you cook it or work out a deal to cook with other people in your space. Even the hotels and hostels that don’t have kitchens open to the guests can store some of your food for you if you ask.
Find the Local Farmer’s Markets
Farmer’s markets are the bomb! In many countries and towns, you can find a farmer’s market to hit up for some greens. Even if you don’t have the space to store them, you can at least buy a few to nibble on later in the day or to take with you into the woods. In places like China and Korea, you can find some stellar fruits and veggies streetside as you stroll through even the most urban areas. Some larger markets are open every day, too. All you have to do is put in a few questions and someone will point you in the right direction. Plus, the farmers will appreciate your business.
Frequent the Local Grocery Stores
Often cheaper than big chain stores and filled with the best local produce, a lot of these independents are conveniently located and easy to access. Plus, you can stock up on anything else you might be missing, such as toothpaste, shampoo and other standard toiletries. The added bonus is that you can help support the local economy at the same time.
Ask for Greens Wherever You Are
Invariably you’ll end up in a spot that doesn’t sport a farmer’s market or you don’t have the time to find a local grocery store. Have no fear. Even restaurants that don’t offer fresh salads on their menus usually stock the fresh goods in back. Ask a few questions and see if they can tailor a fresh dish for you. It may cost a bit more, but it’s a worthwhile investment for your health. See what they say and see how they can help you out. Often just a few polite inquiries and sincere questions will lead to a satisfying and nutritious meal.
So get in some good greens while you soak up another culture. Your body will thank you for it.
