Introducing an Amazing Suite of Web Tools for Creative People
Many software suites such as Photoshop and 3DStudio Max can be prohibitively expensive for artistic hobbyists. Now there is an online alternative that looks very impressive. the suite is called Aviary , and it includes a barrage of online tools named after birds . The idea is that artists can create, share, and also market their works with the suite of tools. For example, you can edit and create images with Phoenix, and then share it in the Rookery, and then sell it on Hawk.
Right now the photo editing software named Phoenix is open for a free beta. I took it for a spin and the interface is quite advanced for a web application. It is not as feature rich as Photoshop yet, but over at the Aviary blog they have some interesting examples of what it can do. One example is a funny and yet mildly disturbing love child of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
What is more interesting is that the finished Phoenix files have the extension of "egg", and it includes layering information just like a Photoshop file. There is already a gallery of user created content and you can actually open other people's "eggs" and see how they created their masterpieces.
Once the software is out of beta Aviary says they may set up a payment system. I am guessing they will be doing a subscription model since it is web software that gets updated constantly. I really do hope that Aviary becomes a full fledged resource for creative people who do not want to and can not afford to spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on software. Anyway, if you are itching to mash up a few celebrities or just retouching your photos, head on to Aviary and sign up!
