As your friendly neighborhood Wisebread writer, I took it upon myself to find some of the most interesting articles on love and money that I could, and I did it all so you don't have to (this is the part where you thank me profusely in the comments).
If you're newly married, about to get married, or sick of arguing about money with the person you married, check out this article from the Houston Chronicle. It's all about what it really takes for a married couple to handle finances as a team, in such a way that they aren't constantly hurting each other. It offers some solid advice for talking through past ideas about money, current spending habits, and coming up with a way to view it all that everyone can live with. As someone who has only been married for a year and who has already had countless arguments about money, this article has some useful tips.
Along similar lines, if you're interested in knowing how people view money and love and both of those together, PayPal has done a survey. The results are here. Apparently, American couples argue more about money while couples in the UK are more likely to have separate bank accounts. And the most interesting fact, at least in my opinion: Traditional “romantic” gifts still top the list of the most popular Valentine’s Day presents given by responding couples in both locations. Cards are the most popular, followed by dinner dates and flowers. Long live the expensive V-Day dinner, i guess.
If that depresses you about living in the US on lover's day, at least you aren't in Singapore right now. The birthrate there has been so low that the population won't be replenished, so the government is sponsoring "Romancing Singapore," a program of subsidized dates that tries to remind the country's young people that making money isn't everything and making babies is just as important for the longevity and success of the country.
If you're not sure where you stand on the whole Love vs. Money issue, this quiz from Blogthings might help. Answer a few short, easy questions and you'll know who you're looking for tonight.
And last, but not least, since we here at Wisebret do our very best to let you all know about the best financial opportunities out there, I felt it would be remiss of me to not tell you about the money tree. Buy one for your lover, one for yourself and, heck, even one for your mom. I always knew there'd be a day when money grew on trees.
