Airline rewards cards are among the most popular travel rewards credit cards on the market, offering valuable travel and airline benefits as well as an opportunity to earn miles with each purchase that can be redeemed for award tickets. The Delta SkyMiles credit cards are especially popular, since the airline is one of the largest in the world. Let's see if the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express is a good option for you.

Why We Like This Card

  • Bonus offer of 30,000 bonus miles
  • Travel benefits like priority boarding, free checked bags, and discount on in-flight purchases.

How This Card Works

Cardholders get two SkyMiles for each dollar spent on purchases made directly from Delta. Earn one mile for each dollar spent on all other eligible purchases.

Bonus Offer: Earn 30,000 bonus miles after you spend $1,000 in purchases with your new card in the first 3 months and a $50 statement credit after you make a Delta purchase with your new card in your first 3 months.

Redeem miles for award flights with Delta. Miles can also be redeemed for flights with partner airlines and for flight upgrades. You can earn an unlimited number of miles which do not expire.

Other Benefits

First checked bag free. Your first checked bag is free when you fly with Delta Air Lines. This is worth approximately $50 on a roundtrip flight. This waiver applies to up to nine passengers traveling on your reservation.

Priority boarding. As a cardmember you receive Zone 1 priority boarding.

Delta Sky Club discount. You and two companions traveling with you can access Delta's airport lounges at a discounted rate. One day passes are generally around $60 per person. (See also: Best Credit Cards with Airport Lounge Access)

In-flight savings. Receive a 20% savings on in-flight purchases made with your card on purchases such as food, alcoholic beverages, and audio headsets. Savings do not apply to any other in-flight purchases, such as in-flight wireless internet access and associated services, and charitable contributions. This savings is applied as a statement credit.

Costs

  • $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $95
  • 16.74%-25.74% Variable APR (purchases and balance transfers)
  • 3% Balance Transfer Fee (minimum $5)
  • $0 Foreign Transaction Fee

Considerations

Annual fee. The annual fee is waived the first year, but can become costly if you don't use your card enough to pay for it or aren't able to earn and redeem enough miles to help offset the fee. There are travel rewards cards with lower or no annual fees.

Who This Card Is Best For

The Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express is best for travelers who fly often enough with Delta to take advantage of the perks and rewards that cover the annual fee. This can mean either earning enough rewards to redeem for award flights, or being able to take advantage of the flight benefits such as the airport lounge discount or in-flight savings.
