Thanks Anita! Have you thought about which Wise Bread writer you would take with you on this trip to Napa Valley if you win?

When we moved into our home, I knew I'd love the place. But what I didn't know, was how much I'd like our neighbors. A friendly, happy neighborhood is the best ROI of all.

That's a great story Carrie. Make sure you shared that on HP's contest page!

It seems like you need a twitter account to participate. What about those who do not have a twitter account?

There's two parts to the contest. The first part (the one with $33,000 in prizes), can be entered without Twitter! Just click on the link and click on "submit your story".

The second part of the contest does require Twitter, but the first part is already pretty cool. =)

ROI in this context reminds me best of the pair of hiking boots I still have in my closet. Living now in the flat and muggy cement city of Houston I only have the need to use these boots occasionally. I will wear them on a unusual cold day when I need to work, walk, or situated in a field of dirt and mud.

Ordinarily this may not seem to be much of an ROI, but in fact it most certainly is, since I've had these boots 36 years and purchased when I was only 14 years old! These hiking shoes still in use today have not blemished in all these years.

I love my Timberlands (also had them since high school). Like you, I don't get much use out of them living in Los Angeles. But whenever I wear them I feel a bit like an action hero, like I can walk through anything. Plus they make me a weeeee bit taller.

My greatest ROI would be my $44/month gym membership. I originally joined the gym to lose a few pounds and to gain some muscle tone, but I was surprised at the unexpected benefits. I have dramatically improved my immune system, overall physical health, and mental well-being. Also, I am able to take kick-boxing classes at my gym, which has allowed me to learn some self-defense moves. As a result, my self-esteem and confidence have improved because I know that I am now physically stronger.

That's great to hear Anne! Congratulations on selecting a new healthier lifestyle. When I used to go to the gym, I think the mental well-being was the biggest "ROI." I just generally felt like a better person because I know I'm taking efforts to protect my body.

Those kick boxing classes look like fun, though I'm intimidated because people in those classes usually already are in very good shape. I don't know if I'd fit in.

My best ROI purchase was a Foodsaver, bought at a yard sale for $5. It was an older model then(15 years ago) and the vacuum and sealer were separate machines. I never did use the sealer much, but using the vacuum portion and a few additional tools (mason jar sealers and a container that i could put reused food jars in to seal and then put on the shelf) I've saved boatloads over the years. Sadly, the vacuum recently broke, but I just bought another used one off of Craigslist.
