Spend Less This Valentine’s Day (And Win an iPod Touch!)

ShareThis

***Congratulations to Emerson (Comment #360)... You have won the iPod Touch.  We have contacted you by email, and you will have 48 hours to claim your prize, or another winner will be drawn. ****

I’ll admit that I’m not as crazy for V-Day as I once was.  The romance is still there, but my husband and I quit getting extravagant with our gifts once more of our money started going toward diapers.  Still, it’s the little things that can touch your heart, so why not start small with a personalized gift that won’t break the bank?  Here are our favorite tips:

Last Minute Valentine Cakes on the Fly– Myscha makes bakin’ up some love seem simple.  Maybe because it really is!

Couplehood:  Avoiding the Valentine’s Clichés – Some might call Andrea cynical.  We call her amazing.  Read up on how to avoid being put into some kind of predictable “love box,” and gain some frugal inspiration at the same time.

Valentine Ideas for the Single Crowd – I know.  Not everyone is “lucky in love.”  But some would consider themselves pretty darn lucky to be single.  (This one’s for you.)

Flower Power: A Guide to Frugal Valentine’s Flowers – Roses are a racket, but that doesn’t mean you have to forgo the flowers.  This guide can save your marriage (and at least $50.)

Cheap and Romantic Ideas for Valentine’s Day – Perfect for any day of the year, these are just plain sweet (and many are free!)

There’s no excuse to avoiding a great gift, just because you’re a little strapped this holiday.  If in doubt, a modern version of the mix-tape is always a great idea.  To help you out, we’ve teamed up with Walmart and Nestle to give one of you lucky readers an 8GB iPod Touch – perfect for uploading your favorite tunes from Walmart.com (or any of the top love songs picked by the 11Moms.)  We’ll even throw in a gift card for your first 10 songs!

To be eligible to win, comment on this post with your favorite frugal V-Day tip.  You have until February 10th to enter.  (Winner will be announced on February 14th!)  U.S. and Canada only.  Must be 18 or older to enter.

Wise Bread will not sell or use your email address for any purpose other than to contact the winner.

And don’t forget to check out all the cool gift ideas, tips, and promotions at http://www.walmart.com/sweetideas.  They include a cool “Blow a Kiss” phone app, special eValentines, and a totally affordable holiday gift guide.  Can you feel the love?

Valentine's day is such an overtly commercial thing nowadays, but a little thought makes it so much more. I use Hand written notes that express more than a store bought card ever could.

My husband knows me as a frugal gal who loves her coupons so he made me a personal coupon book for Valentine's Day last year. He typed it up on the computer and it had coupons for..."A free back massage" and "You win the argument"..(I love this one) Another one was "A night off cooking" They were really funny and fun. He included a romantic candle and a book in the package. He is pretty amazing!

Take the time to cook your special someone a nice dinner. It will cost a lot less then going out and the fact that you put your heart into it and took the time to cook will mean much more.

Keep it simple. It doesn't have to be elaborate to be romantic, just sincere. Some of the most romantic evenings I have ever spent were just taking a walk together hand-in-hand under the moonlight or staying in with chinese take-out and a great romantic movie. Sometimes, it is just the gift of each other that means the most. I would rather have my husband's time and attention than the biggest diamond in the world.

I like to take my girlfriend out somewhere romantic but free, such as a walk in the park or beach, or wine in front of a roaring fire. The great outdoors is free, and wine/chocolate picnic pack is easy to bring with you and much cheaper than a restaurant meal.

There's not much left to say that hasn't already been said here. But certainly less is more. A hand-made card is such a more personal and intimate expression of love than a $5 store-bought card. Who needs a fancy restaurant when you can have a candle-lit dinner in the comfort of your own home (and you don't have to dress up). Thank you for the generous give-away!

My boyfriend has talked about wanting to find time to write. Therefore for his valentine's day present, I found this really nice, but inexpensive journal. I plan on writing the first entry and hope that he continues it. Its personal, sentinmental, cheap, and something that i know he will appreciate.

Instead of an impersonal and expensive restaurants, I am going to build a fire in the fireplace and we will have a sexy picnic in front of the fire with sparkling wine and a red checkered tablecloth on the floor.

I always write my husband a love poem for Valentine's Day to remind him of our journey of the year together and our dreams for a future together as well.

Lastly, to show him how much I love him all year long, every year for Valentine's Day I take a special box and fill it wil little things he might want when he is at his office -- ibuprophen, breath mints, snack bars, antacid tablets, batteries, little boxes of raisins, tissues, etc. When he needs a headache pill or a cold tablet or a battery he will know I am taking care of him.

Since my divorce, I've viewed Valentine's Day as a day to celebrate all the people, in my life, whom I love and treasure.

Each person receives a handwritten note about what is special about them, and our friendship.

For my amazingly talented and loving 12 yr old daughter, I give a special 'book' of loving compliments about her and her accomplishments.

For my foster children, I take extra time to sit with each of them and tell them how wonderful they are and how lucky we are to have them living with us.

For the last two years, my boyfriend and I have celebrated Valentine's Day by taking a relaxing bath together complete with candlelight, rose petals, bubbles, and a glass of red wine. He won't admit it to anyone, but I know he enjoys it just as much as me. For less than $20, we both spend a relaxing evening together, and nothing beats having your back rubbed by your significant other!

I'm sure lots of other people have said this, but I think cooking a nice dinner at home is more intimate than a restaurant. And even with fancy ingredients it will be cheaper than going out.

Always always always make your own thoughtful and/or funny greeting cards. Spend time and effort on it. You'll have a treasure that can't be bought in a store.

Great giveaway. Thanks!

I love to grill ribeye steaks, add loaded baked potatoes, and a salad with candlelite and wine, and an evening alone. Eating out is too busy and usually the food ends up being lousy, so being at home, alone with someone special is way better.

Guest's picture

Make your special someone a meal yourself. Instead of going out to a restaurant and spending a fortune, this will show your creative culinary skills and really impress them!

Guest's picture

We celebrate love in general with a nice family dinner, maybe some special cookies & ice cream or cupcakes for dessert, and saying one thing we each really love about each other. And my daughter makes handmade Valentine's for her classmates.

Guest's picture

A great way to not spend too much on Valentine's Day is to just go out and buy some groceries to make you and your love's favorite dishes for dinner (especially one that have significance) and make dessert (like cheesecake or chocolate dipped strawberries!). Make a makeshift picnic area in your backyard or light up lots and lots of candles and lay out rose petals on your dining table to set the mood. And there you have a romantic and simple night with your loved one.

My favorite romantic thing is to make dinner at home together. Get a bottle of wine and open it up and sip it together while you prepare dinner together. Then get dressed up fancy and sit at the dining room table with some candles and eat. Then watch a romantic movie in bed together...

We make it special by eating a beautiful dinner at home. The cost for a restaurant is prohibitive, but we can grill excellent steaks and have salad and wine at home for alot less money.
Flowers come from the grocery store, too.

First off, the least expensive thing you can do is remember that it is Valentine's Day.

If I work that day and come home to a clean home, I'm a happy camper. I don't ask for much. Somewhere clean to relax with a nice simple dinner that I don't have to make. Oh, and do the dishes for me too :)

One Valentine's Day when money was extra tight I thought up something I called the "Magic Box". I took a nice little gift box and placed a pad of post-it notes and a pen in it, and I gave that to my boyfriend for Valentine's Day.

At first he was confused, but I explained to him that the magic box made wishes come true, and if he wrote down romance-related wishes, we would take out the notes and do what was written on them. Kind of a spin on the love coupon idea, except he got to write what he wanted.

Guest's picture

I found great website that has printable "lovers coupons". They can be redeemed by you or your honey! There are many websites that offer many options: cute & sweet or wild & crazy! It's free AND it adds so much spice to your love life...for many months after Valentine's Day!

My husband and I make "10 Things" lists for each other. Instead of spending money on more generic cards or getting stumped on long sentiments to compose, we write a list to each other of "10 Things" we love about the other.

Sometimes simple, sometimes deep, anything from "I love how you iron your own clothes!" to "I love how sweaty you look after doing a honey-do for me!" to "I love how you sing to our little one at night..."

When we finish our "list" we sneak it somewhere the other is bound to find it during the day; the lists I have been given are stashed in my nightstand so I can pull them out from time to time when I need a little reminder or pick-me-up :)

We started this tradition a few Valentine's Days ago and have kept it going ever since, we even concoct more love lists throughout the year and enjoy surprising one another with the note somewhere creative (i.e. tucking it in his work truck during the day). This is our frugal (yet genuine) way to say I love you, that also helps my manly husband express his feelings!

I made my hubby a card - I searched far and wide for the perfect quote to capture our relationship (finally found it, though it took me about a week of searching!) and really went all-out with the v-day paper, etc. I made (simpler) cards for all of my close friends and family with the same materials so I really saved a lot of money. On the day, we'll cook a simple dinner together, open a bottle of our favorite wine, and curl up in front of the fire.

I've been working at a hotel for a number of years, so I have a few hotel connections. This Valentines Day I plan on surprising her with the following all for free on Valentine's Day:

followed by staying in one of their suites

I havne't told her yet!

Love is free to give and receive and I think the most frugal valentine's day gift is the expression of love- just take some time and put into words how much you love your husband/wife/significant other. You can write a good old fashioned love letter and that will be something they can cherish for years & will mean the world to them.

Guest's picture

dont overdo it and buy the cliche things like heartshaped boxes with this or that and skip the fancy restaurants.
Buy a nice bottle of wine, stay home and cook together, shower together, make her breakfast with a small note saying something to surprise her, pay attention to each other, sit down and talk, just be... together.

thats what it should be all about

For Valentines day my husband and I make a dinner together at home instead of eating out, which save a lot. We've also mutually agreed not to exchange gifts(flowers, chocolates, etc) with each other saving lots too.
I feel like it's such a better deal, to just spend quality time together!

Guest's picture

We like to stay home for Valentine's Day. Being at home together is always special. I will make a romantic, candle lit dinner and make some chocolate dipped strawberries or chocolate fondue for dessert. The experience is better than random gifts for us.

Guest's picture

Remember that the key to a successful Valentine's Day is to do something where you spend time inte racting with one another. Going ot th emovies is nice, but sitting in a dark room watching a screen doesn't beat something cheaper like board games, a walk, or just chatting by a fire.

Guest's picture

Once the kids are in bed we will open a bottle of wine, get out the fruit and chocolate fondue and enjoy a quiet couple of hours together.

My ultimate low-cost valentine's day was when a boyfriend snuck out of bed around 6:30, to pop a tray of cinnamon rolls in the oven, and flip on the coffee maker. We'd made them together the night before and left them to rise, and I got to wake up about an hour later to the delicious smell of a cinnamony breakfast all ready to go.
There is something very decadent about baked treats and coffee in bed, and what better introduction to pajama-related fun? (Minus the morning breath!)

We don't spend much on Valentine's Day, like most families, we don't need a special day to say we love each other. We usually have something really nice for dinner that we don't normally have and my children make us Valentine's day cards that mean the world to me.

My sweetie loves truffles. I walked into a Starbucks in January and found a little box of truffles for 75% off. The exterior box was a Christmas box which I tossed. The inner box is totally plain, a dark brown. And so I am tieing it up with a big red ribbon and attaching my homemade Valentine card. It looks very classy and I know will be a big hit!

My frugal tip is to pass on the romantic eating out and eat in instead. If you don't want to cook too much, the preprepped stuff at the grocery store is still cheaper than eating out and can be pretty darn tasty

I once bought a pack of children's school valentines a wrote a loving comment about my husband on each one. I sealed each valentine and put them in a cut glass jar that we already owned.
Not only did my husband spend the entire dinner reading each valentine, but he keeps the jar and valentines in our china cabinet.

I used to practice the best money saving tip EVER: break up before V-Day.

Start the day off with hugs and kisses.
Send a simple "just wanted to say I love you" text message during the day...maybe more than once!

Enjoy the time together!

My husband and I have pledged to not bother with flowers or gifts this year, and instead we're going to a nearby state park for Valentine's. It'll be cheap since we have a parks pass, and packed sandwiches go very well with fantastic scenery! Even with gas for the car, it'll be cheaper than dinner and a movie--not to mention healthier, more active, and a better memory for the photo album!

Valentine's Day is my parents' anniversary. They got married right after high school and are still going strong after 39 years (this year). They're my Valentine's inspiration. They never did fancy dinners out or gigantic bouquets of over-priced flowers. It was simple. A from-the-heart card, a kiss and a special homecooked meal. This year is my first Valentine's as a married woman. We're opting for a nice night in with a good steak, cheap wine and a movie. Oh... and the ultimate freebie... snuggling!

My boyfriend and I are going to be staying in and making dinner together this year. ^_^ I'm not much of one for flowers, since they just die in a few days, so he wont be spending any money on roses or anything. Our 'gifts' to each other is our time together.

Baked goods. You can make a whole batch of cookies inexpensively and then give them out individually wrapped. Or you can make regular candy bars special by wrapping them in scrapbook paper and making a special tag for them.

I like to make homemade chocolate truffles for my family for Valentine's Day. There are numerous recipes on the internet (I like to look on the Hersheys, Nestle, and Ghirardelli websites). This way I can give a decadent treat at a fraction of the cost of buying packaged chocolates.

What I do is have the "main event" on the day before or after Valentine's. Like if it's going out for dinner it'll be on a different day. You can save time by avoiding crowds and save money avoiding any special Valentine's pricing.

Make an "I love you because" jar with reasons for each day to take out of the jar. Try to get 100-150 reasons. My husband did this once for me and it was the most romantic Valentine Day ever!!

My wife and I had little money last year and ended up spending very little on Valentines Day. I made her a card. I made her supper and we ate it by candlelight (we even saved money on electric.) We gave each other "vouchers" for things the other person usually does. Showing somebody they're loved doesn't need to cost much at all!

Thanks for the contest.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with a trip to the bookstore together. Many have lovely coffee shops associated with them, where you can select a special brew (by all means, this is the time to indulge in whip cream toppings)and add a scrumptious pastry to share as you spend some quality time together. If you're planning a trip this year, visit the travel section. If you share a special hobby, pick out a picture book that inspires you. Sometimes the bookstores have author lectures - those can be fun, too. Give your thoughts, your dreams and your imagination this year.

My frugal tip is that I like making a heart shaped homemade pizza for Valentine's Day. It is so much cheaper than spending $40+ for an evening out. (We don't have kids so we really don't have to go out to get a little "alone" time.) Hey, maybe that should qualify as another frugal tip! (Just kidding, kids are great and worth the sacrifices.) I'd LOVE to win an iPod Touch for my husband. That would be the ultimate Valentine's Day gift.

Get a little journal that you can write, draw and stick in photos of the special moments that have happened between the two of you or something wonderful that your significant other did that made you smile. When it is full, it can be a nice keepsake to present to your loved one and a reminder how special s/he is to you.

I don't know if you've heard of WORDLE, but it's a free web app, available at http://www.wordle.net/ It is a tag cloud creator that you can customize with different fonts and colors. You can wordle a special poem or favorite love song lyrics or maybe even wedding vows. The more times a word is mentioned, the larger it appears in the wordle. This could be a really touching gift and is very personal...all you have to do is create, then press the print button--and wrap it up!

I remember the look of surprise on my guy's face when I told him that I still got butterflies when we were together. So, when trying to come up with an inexpensive but innovative way of showing him just how much I cared for him.....I found all sorts of scraps of paper laying around the house, from decorative hand-made paper to Sunday's newspaper, found a butterfly template, and cut out lots (and I mean lots) of paper butterflies. I put them in a large manila envelope and mailed them to him at his office, with a note that said, "Yes, I DO still get butterflies everytime I see you." He was quite surprised to open the envelope and have dozens of these little critters fall out. By sending it to his office, I also avoided the potential "what the heck is this?" look that can come from a misinterpreted or misplaced show of affection, although in this case, I heard it wasn't necessary!
