What if your splurges were a sign of a deeper shopping addiction?</p> <p>Shopping addiction might sound like a fake condition, but it's real. The World Psychiatric Association refers to it as compulsive buying disorder, or CBD. According to the association, CBD is characterized by excessive shopping and buying decisions that lead to either remorse or, even worse, prevent you from paying your bills, socializing, or interacting with your family members.</p> <p>The association says that 5.8% of the U.S. population battles this condition throughout their lives.</p> <p>How do you know if you are suffering from CBD? Here are seven clues that your shopping is more than just a fun diversion:</p> <h2>1. You Hide Your Purchases</h2> <p>We're supposed to buy items to use them. But those suffering from shopping addiction often hide their purchases deep inside bedroom closets, under their beds, or in other hiding spots. Why? They are hiding their purchases from a spouse, partner, or family member. Those suffering from shopping addictions often want to hide the evidence of their overspending. This is one of the top warning signs of a spending addiction.</p> <h2>2. You Constantly Break Your Household Budget</h2> <p>Each month, you vow to keep your spending within the budget you've set for your household. But every month, your spending shatters your careful plans. You might feel remorse over this, but you overspend every month anyway. This inability to stick to a spending plan is another of the key signs that your shopping habits are out of control.</p> <h2>3. Your Overspending Happens All Year Long</h2> <p>It's easy to overspend during certain times of the year, such as during the winter holidays. Overspending all year long, though, is a more serious sign of a serious spending addiction. The World Psychiatric Association makes it a point to say that compulsive buying disorder isn't just a seasonal problem; it's a yearlong spending pattern.</p> <h2>4. You Buy Items You Don't Need</h2> <p>Do you come home from a shopping trip with bags full of clothing you'll never wear or electronics that you'll never use? Buying items that you neither want nor need is another sign that your shopping habits are out of control.</p> <h2>5. You Can't Buy Just One</h2> <p>Buying one pair of jeans isn't so bad. Coming home with a dozen? That's troubling. Buying items compulsively is another big sign of a shopping addiction. If you can't just buy one pair of shoes, and instead feel compelled to buy eight &mdash; that's a good sign that your shopping is controlling you instead of the other way around.</p> <h2>6. Remorse</h2> <p>How often do you feel remorse or guilt when returning home after a shopping spree? If it's often, you might be struggling with a spending addiction. The World Psychiatric Association says that remorse is one of the top signs exhibited by consumers who are not in control of their spending habits. You should be able to return from a shopping trip pleased with your purchases. If you're feeling the opposite, it might be time to seek help from a therapist.</p> <h2>7. You're Anxious When You're Not at the Store</h2> <p>Finally, if you often find yourself anxious when not spending, you might be suffering from a significant spending addiction. You should be able to relax and enjoy the time you're not spending at the stores. If this contentment eludes you, and if instead you are constantly planning out or imagining your next visit to a shopping mall, you might be a sufferer of CBD.</p> <h2>Where to Turn for Help</h2> <p>If you do feel you may have a problem with shopping addiction, you have several options. Donald Black MD, a professor of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa College of Medicine, told WebMD that there are no medications or standard <a href="http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/addiction/features/shopping-spree-addiction?page=3">treatments for shopping addiction</a>, and that some doctors seek to treat underlying depression with antidepressants or behavior modification therapy. Ultimately, Black said, behavior change is necessary. Tired? Depressed? Is daily life getting you down? Maybe you need a treat!</p> <p>Except that treating yourself can be expensive, and it doesn't actually make anything better. We are trained to believe that it will, though, and that the money we spend is justified in the name of self-care.</p> <p>Just recently, my family went through a very stressful time with my husband's job. Since he makes the majority of our income right now, that was hard on me, too. As we processed the situation and dealt with the stress, I found myself spending money. I'm a pretty frugal person, so it wasn't anything obscene, just a $20 workout top here and a lunch out with the kids there.</p> <p>Over the course of a month, though, it added up, and I realized what was happening. I was buying these things to make myself feel better or to try and make my life easier, but they weren't helping because they didn't actually address the stressful situation. I had fallen prey to the &quot;treat yo self&quot; mindset (made famous by Donna Meagle from <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SG16TIC/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00SG16TIC&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=wisbre03-20&amp;linkId=MMUUVQNHZCRUZOPD">Parks and Recreation</a>), like up to <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/23/retail-therapy-shopping_n_3324972.html">a third of all Americans</a>, especially women, do when they're stressed out.</p> <p>Fortunately, I caught myself before I did us any real financial damage, and I was able to stop. But that whole situation made me think about spending money on self-care and what it has come to mean for us.</p> <h2>Self-Care Can Be Pricey</h2> <p>Self-care can cost us quite a bit of money. Many people don't even realize that they are spending to soothe themselves until they get a credit card bill and, by then, the damage has already been done! Even folks who really don't have extra money to spend get sucked in by advertising messages and other spending pressures that permeate our culture, and make poor financial decisions in the name of alleviating stress and pressure, even just for a little bit.</p> <p>However, the costs of treating ourselves when distressed go beyond the financial. Too often, we end up confusing self-care with coping. Coping isn't always a bad thing, and we need coping strategies to get through really bad times, but they aren't something that should stay around. They aren't something that we normally think of as good.</p> <p>When we let ourselves continually care for ourselves with coping strategies &mdash; like spending a lot of money on ourselves &mdash; we never learn to actually address and overcome our problems. We risk not being aware of our own feelings, and numbing ourselves rather than telling ourselves the truth and dealing with that truth. And I don't think that's what we set out to do.</p> <p>Interested in addressing your stress without excessive spending? Here are some strategies I've found helpful.</p> <h2>Pursue True Self-Care</h2> <p>The idea that we need to take care of ourselves is actually true, but that doesn't need to involve spending lots of money. Instead, when in stressful situations, we need to focus on a few key things.</p> <p>First, look to your diet, exercise, and sleep. It's hard to be disciplined about these things when facing major stressors, but addressing them will help you stay strong and avoid adding personal illness to your list of difficulties.</p> <p>You don't have to do anything hugely out of the ordinary here. Make sure that you are eating vegetables and not filling up on sugar or other processed junk foods. Even if you have to eat out a lot, some choices are better than others. And take a walk every day. Even 20 or 30 minutes of exercise can change your whole mindset. Finally, do whatever you can to get at least seven hours of sleep. Even if you get by on less than that normally, being stressed usually means you need more sleep than usual.</p> <p>When you're under stress, you probably won't be able to be consistent with all of these, all the time. Still, making them priorities will help you focus on them when you can and hit your goals more than you would otherwise.</p> <h2>Pick and Choose Your Treats</h2> <p>It's not always a bad idea to spend money on something when you're under stress, as long as that thing will truly make you feel better. If you can get intentional about your treats and know which of your needs they are meeting, you won't feel like you need so many.</p> <p>For instance, a bright pedicure might actually make you feel better in a dreary hospital room. Or a steak dinner might be just what you need after living a couple of weeks on convenience food in order to hit a big deadline. Paying someone else to clean your house might actually relieve some of your stress if you are injured and can't do it yourself.</p> <p>But pick one or two things to spend your money on, rather than choosing everything that comes to mind. And know, ahead of time, why you're spending your money in that particular way by listing, out loud or on paper, which need you're addressing. This can help you focus on buying essential things, or at least things that will actually help, rather than spending willy-nilly.</p> <h2>Focus on People</h2> <p>Many times, when we are in stressful situations, what we really want is for someone to hear us, to listen to us talk about the situation, and sit with us in it. That can be hard to find, especially if you are under stress away from home or your family and/or close friends are involved in the stress, too.</p> <p>If you can, call that person up. Ask them for a coffee date, or even just a few minutes on the phone, and be yourself. Pour your heart out if you need to. This will make you feel better than any purchase you could possibly make, and it will lighten the load you're bearing so you may no longer feel the need to purchase anything at all.</p> <p><em>How do you deal with stress? Nearly every device we touch gives us an opportunity to spend money, even if we never set foot in a brick-and-mortar store. But it is possible to make spending mindful again, without feeling overwhelmed or deprived.</p> <p>Here are five ways to put an end to mindless spending for good.</p> <h2>1. Use Gift Cards for Online Purchases</h2> <p>My big mistake with my Kindle was allowing my credit card information to be synced for one-click ordering. Putting an additional layer of work between wanting a title and buying it can be enough to keep me from spending mindlessly.</p> <p>That's why I've removed my credit card information from my Amazon account, and I have committed to using gift cards for my purchases. When I find something I want on Amazon (or another e-tailer), I purchase an electronic gift card through a third party site that benefits local charities. The extra effort required to get the gift card is enough of an annoyance that I know for sure whether or not the purchase is worthwhile, and it makes me feel good to know that institutions I care about will benefit when I do decide to buy.</p> <p>More importantly, using gift cards removes the one-click purchase temptations, which have gotten me into trouble on more than one occasion.</p> <h2>2. Record All of Your Purchases</h2> <p>Writing down every single penny that you spend can be an eye-opening experience. Not only is this a good way to find the leaks in your budget, but it can also help disrupt your habit of mindless spending. Since you must take the time to write down the $0.99 for a new song on iTunes here and the $4.78 for a gourmet cupcake there, you will create enough space for yourself to think through each purchase and decide whether it is something you really want.</p> <p>Additionally, many times you might find yourself thinking you really don't want to write down a particular purchase. If seeing the reality of what you have spent in black-and-white does not appeal, then you probably don't really want to spend the money and would be happier keeping it in your wallet.</p> <h2>3. Pay Attention to Context</h2> <p>Every habit you have depends upon a context. The environment is often the context or cue for you to engage in a particular habit.</p> <p>For instance, when my mother was working to quit smoking over 30 years ago, she realized that she lit a cigarette every day in the car upon passing a certain landmark in her morning commute. During the first few weeks after she quit, she took an alternate route to work, making it easier to forgo that particular cigarette of the day.</p> <p>Researchers have found that Mom's strategy works for any kind of habit. When movie-goers were given free popcorn (that happened to be stale) in a movie theater environment, those who habitually ate popcorn at the multiplex <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-science-success/201110/the-2-simple-ways-stop-your-mindless-bad-habits">ate the same amount</a> of the stale stuff as they would have eaten of a fresh batch. But put those habitual popcorn eaters in a conference room to watch a film with a free bag of stale popcorn, and they stopped eating the stuff &mdash; since the context did not activate their habit.</p> <p>If you have a tendency to spend mindlessly in particular situations, such as when you go to happy hour with friends, find a way to change the context. For example, just shaking up which bar or what type of establishment you go to can be enough to stall your mindless spending habit. According to Psychology Today, <em>any</em> alternate activity is less likely to trigger your mindless habit.</p> <h2>4. Give Every Dollar a Home</h2> <p>My husband is paid on a monthly schedule, which means we feel remarkably flush on the first of every month. To keep ourselves from mindlessly getting takeout or wasting money on Pay-Per-View movies, we don't just let his paycheck sit in our checking account. Instead, we automatically transfer money to various savings accounts as soon as his salary hits the bank, leaving just enough to cover our monthly bills (with a cushion).</p> <p>Knowing that every dollar that comes in has a specific purpose does a great deal to curb our mindless spending, since we would have to access savings in order to spend outside of our monthly budget.</p> <h2>5. Keep a Running List of Things You Need</h2> <p>We take convenience for granted these days. Many stores are open 24 hours, and something you order online can be on your doorstep the very next day. But many of the things that you need are not time sensitive &mdash; and waiting to make purchases can help you stop spending on unnecessary impulse items.</p> <p>This is why it's a good idea to keep a list of needed items, rather than running out to the store or logging onto Amazon as soon as you realize what you are lacking. With a specific list in hand at a brick-and-mortar store, you are less likely to &quot;browse&quot; and find something that you think you can't live without.</p> <p>In addition, keeping a list of needed items can help you overcome the &quot;free shipping&quot; trap of online purchases. If you wait to make orders online until you have enough items to qualify for free shipping, you don't end up buying things you don't really want just to get some of that sweet free shipping action.</p> <h2>Breaking Bad Habits</h2> <p>Spending your money without thinking about it is nothing more than a habit, and habits can be broken and changed. What's more insidious than that, is the fact that most of us get used to spending over the holidays. We buy special gifts, special meals, special tickets, and more. But come January, most of us need to stop these splurges. We can't live that way all the time, or we will run out of money to pay the bills and buy what we need.</p> <p>It's hard, though, to see what we want and not buy it, especially when we've become lax with our self-control in that area. Here are some ideas to help you turn your spending around, and ultimately resist the urge to splurge.</p> <h2>1. Understand Your Feelings</h2> <p>Many of us overspend when something negative is going on in our lives. We want the instant gratification that comes with having something new because something else isn't working. Rather than making the purchase, we can stop and focus on what is making us feel bad, work that out, and then we won't need to buy anything in order to feel better.</p> <p>If you can't make yourself stop and think about your feelings <em>after </em>you've felt the urge to splurge, try sitting down and identifying the types of feelings that make you want to spend. Think over past splurges and see if something else was causing you the stress that buying something alleviated. Put some serious energy into this exercise, and you'll be better prepared to resist temptation the next time it rears its head.</p> <h2>2. Consider the Context</h2> <p>Before you make a spontaneous purchase, force yourself to consider the entire financial context in which you're making the purchase. If you buy this thing that you want, will you be able to pay your bills this month? Will it cause you to go into debt? Will it keep you from reaching your overall financial goals?</p> <p>Often, considering the cumulative effects that a purchase can have will help you stave off the spending spree. When you see the ways that spending now could impact you negatively later, it's a lot easier to walk away without putting your money down.</p> <h2>3. Think About Anything Else</h2> <p>Sometimes, we splurge because we can't stop thinking about something we saw, wanted, and almost bought. After you make yourself walk away initially, think about something else. Go back to work, call a friend, make plans for the weekend &mdash; whatever! Just get your mind off of whatever it was you considered spending your money on.</p> <p>If this is hard for you, make a deal with a friend that you'll help each other. When one of you wants to buy something, you can call or text the other and know that there's someone to help you redirect your thoughts. That way, you won't be alone in your quest to avoid the splurge.</p> <h2>4. Calm Yourself Down</h2> <p>Buying something often makes us feel better because it stimulates us. We get excited. Unfortunately, we don't always make the best decisions when we are following our excitement.</p> <p>If you're in the middle of the store or out with friends, try taking a few deep breaths. If you can escape to a bathroom &mdash; even better. Close your eyes and breathe in for a count of four, hold for a count of four, breathe out for a count of four, and leave your lungs empty for a count of four. Do this several times and you will find your mind clearer. You'll probably make a better decision about what to buy, too. Wait Before You Buy</h2> <p>Make an agreement with yourself, before you buy another thing, that you have to wait a certain amount of time before you spend money impulsively. This might be 24 hours, two days, or even a week. The point is that you give yourself time to consider your purchase, decide how it fits into your budget, and deal with your feelings before any money leaves your wallet.</p> <p>Some people only do this with purchases over a certain amount of money. For instance, you may decide that it is the purchases over $50 that are really hurting you. In that case, you can decide that you have to wait a week before you spend anything over that amount. It helps to have someone to keep you accountable here, so you don't override the decision on a whim.</p> <h2>6. List the Things You Want (Rather Than Buying Them)</h2> <p>When you want to buy something, add it to a list of wants, rather than making the purchase now. Sometimes, this satisfies the urge entirely. And even if it doesn't, it often settles the feeling that you have to buy it now or you will never find/see/encounter it again. If you're buying online, save a picture of the item and a link somewhere. If you're in a store, snap a photo of the item and another of the price and store those.</p> <p>This can sound crazy, but it definitely works. I have a friend who &quot;fake buys&quot; things all the time, and another who keeps a Pinterest board of all the stuff she'd like to get. Capturing an item in this way can satisfy the urge to possess something, without spending all of your money on actually getting it.</p> <p><em>How do you stave off a splurge? I couldn't believe that people stood in line for them. The final Star Wars movie was decent - I waited for the DVD. Some people camped outside the damn theater.</p> <p>There are very few things that are important enough, to me, to stand in line to purchase. This is partly because I don't like people, and thus try to avoid milling among them for any amount of time. This is also because there's just no purchasable item that I find worth my time. It's also, partly, a product of my upbringing. My mother is simply not much of a bargain shopper, and certainly never waited outside of a store for more than a few minutes (nevermind hours) in order to get inside and snatch up the first discounted television set that she saw.</p> <p>This is why I am so completely baffled that a 270 pound man was trampled to death by rabid shopopers at a Wal-mart in Long Island this past Friday.</p> <p>Now, stampedes happen. Whenever people desperately flee to a new area and arrive at a bottleneck of somekind, someone is going to get hurt. You hear about it occasionally on the news: pligrims trampled in Ramadan pilgrimage. Nigerians tramped in riot. These are stampedes that make a tiny bit more sense in m brain: religious pilgrimages are emotional events, involving lots of activity and numerous people. While I am not religious, I can see why this might happen in, say, Mecca. Or in a poor country where people are scrounging for food.</p> <p>But this happened in Long Island. In the USA. Over Walmart merchandise.</p> <p>Let me repeat this: a man was trampled to death.&nbsp;A temporary employee of Wal-mart, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/30/nyregion/30walmart.html">Jdimytai Damour</a>, was crushed under the feet of shoppers eager to get their hands on cheap. Chinese-made goods. Shopper literally broke down the glass doors to the Wal-mart where Damour was working, and he remained under the door as hundreds of people clambored over the top of him. Imagine stepping over a man lying prone beneath a sheet of glass. Can you fathom that?&nbsp;Could you? For what? What could possibly allow human beings to behave like homicidal lemmings.</p> <p>I don't doubt that many people shop at Wal-mart in order to save money, but I seriously doubt that this insane mob of people consisted mostly of suburban mothers looking for jumbo-sized diaper packs. No, these were people looking for slashed prices on electronics, outdoor gear, and clothing. These were bargain shoppers, for sure, but no one who stepped on Damour's chest was there because they had run out of bread and heating oil.</p> <p>What have we come to? Is 20% off of a LCD television really worth the life of a man like Damour? Is it worth anything? How can anyone stand in line for this stuff? Wal-mart, really? Listen, I know I can be an elitist sometimes, but I&nbsp;occasionally shop at Walmart.
