That depends. It can mean life or death for your pet if they experience a major medical issue — especially an expensive one that requires hospitalization or emergency surgery — but it can seem like an unnecessary monthly expense if you're paying into the plan and not using it. To make a decision whether pet insurance is right for you, here are a few things you should know. (See also: Is Pet Health Insurance Worth It?)

1. There are three types of pet health coverage

Most pet insurance companies break down coverage into three categories. The lowest tier is an accident-only plan, which only covers accidents and emergencies, like if your dog gets hurt by another dog at the park. This coverage does not include any hereditary issues or serious health conditions. Conversely, there's a wellness plan, which doesn't include anything that the accident-only plan includes, but rather focuses on wellness and routine care, like annual exams, dental cleanings, and routine medications, like heartworm and flea-and-tick prevention.

Two plans that don't overlap anywhere kind of force pet parents into the all-encompassing third option, and that's where the more expensive, major medical plans come in.

More than 90 percent of all pet insurance plans purchased are in this category, according to PetInsuranceQuotes.com, which helps users compare coverage and prices among leading providers. It's likely major medical plans are so popular because they cover everything except wellness and routine care. Accidents, illnesses, cancer, orthopedic issues, hereditary conditions, and prescription meds are under the veil of these plans, the price of which is mostly determined by the breed of pet you have.

2. Pet insurance can help you avoid major debt

For many pet parents, putting an animal down when an expensive health issue strikes just isn't an option. They'll use any means possible to come up with the money to keep their pet alive. Using money from your emergency fund if it's readily available is one thing, but putting the bill on a credit card when money is already tight just isn't smart.

Pet insurance, however, can eliminate that issue altogether. You'll pay a small amount each month so you don't have to experience even greater stress about your finances when your pet is in the hospital. The premium is probably worth the peace of mind. (See also: 5 Pet Costs You Don't See Coming)

3. Having coverage could mean saving your pet's life

When I first moved to Manhattan, barely able to pay my bills, my husband wanted a dog. I was dead-set against it, but his continued pleas caused me to cave, and before I knew it, we had a rambunctious puppy.

Fast forward to a year-and-a-half later, still struggling to make ends meet, and our dog Jaxon is rushed to the hospital with a respiratory infection that cost about $8,000. There was a brief period of time when we weren't sure if our pet insurance would cover the cost of treatment — or how much we would have to spend out-of-pocket — and we had to make a tough decision. It was a quick decision. We could afford up to $3,000 in out-of-pocket expenses and nothing more; otherwise we would have to say our goodbyes. Thankfully we didn't have to, because the little bugger is still my best bud. Pet insurance saved Jaxon's life that day, and it could very well save your pet's life, too. (See also: 6 Pet Expenses You Should Never Skip)

4. Age plays an important part in the coverage you'll get

It's important to enroll your pet while they're young and healthy enough to get the best coverage at the lowest price. No pet insurance provider will cover pre-existing conditions, which makes getting coverage as the pet ages tougher and more expensive, if possible at all.

"If your pet is a senior and/or has pre-existing conditions, you may want to consider the accident-only plan," says Chris Middleton, president of Pets Best, a leading pet insurance provider. "Or get the accident-only plan and add routine care to it."

I decided to end major medical coverage on Jaxon because he doesn't go anywhere that he'll get hurt and he hasn't had any major medical issues for years; that level of insurance was becoming an expense that wasn't worth it. He's also getting up there in age, and at some point I have to let nature take its course. For now, he's happy, healthy, and we're enjoying life together.

5. Your pet's breed will influence coverage and cost

Some pet breeds are more prone to hereditary conditions and medical issues than others, which will affect the price you'll pay for pet insurance right off the bat. For example, you can expect to pay an average of $45 a month for a Labrador retriever versus $53 a month for an English bulldog, according to PetInsuranceQuotes.com. Both of these breeds come with their own set of hereditary issues that can be expensive to treat, which affect prices. If you know you want pet insurance but haven't found the perfect pet yet, it's worth researching insurance premiums based on breed; it may inform your decision on what breeds to focus on and which to avoid. (See also: 8 Ways to Lower Your Vet Bills)

6. Find the coverage that works best for your pet and your wallet

To get the most for your pet insurance price, look for a provider that covers the largest portion of your veterinary bill, coverage for congenital and hereditary conditions, and has no limits to the amount they will pay out.

"Choose a deductible that fits your budget and how they are applied," adds pet insurance provider Trupanion. "Deductibles can help you control your premiums while making sure you see coverage before you hit your budget limit."

7. Pet insurance usually works on a reimbursement model

Pet insurance is a reimbursement model, meaning the pet owner pays their bill at the veterinarian (and often you must pay it in full before your pet is allowed to leave the facility), then submit the proof of payment to the provider for reimbursement. You should research the company's options for submitting claims before choosing a provider, advises Middleton.

"Since pet insurance is a reimbursement model, getting your money back quickly is one of the most important features," Middleton says. "It's also important to look at how they will reimburse you. Some companies will only cut a check to pay your claim; so you have to factor in the time to cut the check, get it mailed to you, then deposit it."

Direct-deposit reimbursement also is available at some providers.

Like this article? But in the world of pet care, how do we know what's worth it and what isn't — especially when we examine the price tags associated with such expenses? You and your favorite cuddle buddy can live without a lot of what's out there, but here are the pet care costs you should never skip. (See also: 8 Ways to Lower Your Vet Bills)

1. Vaccinations

Vaccines do an incredible amount of good versus whatever rogue side effects have been suggested, largely by the nonscientific community. This goes for your pets, too.

There's been some controversy on whether cats actually need annual shots, and the general consensus — among some, but not all vets — is that if your cat is strictly indoors and doesn't come into contact with other cats that may have feline leukemia, you can probably skip a year or two on vaccinations.

Pet-care author, Kelly Meister-Yetter, affectionately known as the Critter Lady, says she has four indoor-only cats and she doesn't have them vaccinated every year. If your cat is to be boarded, however, virtually every establishment will require updated shots.

Dogs, however, are a different story. "You should never skip dog vaccinations, especially the rabies update shot every year," Meister-Yetter says. And some rabies vaccinations are good for three years. "Dogs can get into all manner of mischief, and it's always best to keep them safe."

2. Consistent veterinary care from infancy

A pet parent should never skimp on vet care, which should include a yearly physical exam. Not only does the examination allow your veterinarian to assess the overall health of your pet, it also creates a health care team for you, the pet parent.

"When the pet is sick or injured, they will be worked in right away with someone who knows the pet and has its medical history, known medications and allergies, everything," according to Kathryn Primm, resident veterinarian at pet wellness site IHeartDogs.com.

Vet care shouldn't be used as an emergency resource, but rather an established method of preventive care, from the moment you adopt or decide to bring a pet into your family.

House Call Vet NYC Dr. Jeff Levy, whose practice specializes in holistic pet care, says regular checkups combined with a reasonable vaccination protocol can prevent unforeseen and costly medical problems throughout your pet's life. This preventive care can save you a substantial amount of money by addressing potential problems before they reach a stage that you may not be able to afford.

3. Pet insurance

Pet insurance, though it may seem costly over the span of your pet's life, will spare you money and heartbreak in emergency situations that can cost thousands.

My own dog had a respiratory issue very early on, the surgery for which crept upwards of $10,000. It's horrible to say, but if I didn't have pet insurance for him, we wouldn't have spent the past seven years post-procedure enjoying each other's company. Pet insurance saved his life.

Jamie Thomas, executive director of Motley Zoo Animal Rescue in Washington State, says she experiences the consequences of uninsured pets on a regular basis.

"We routinely see animals surrendered for something as simple as a broken leg — [which costs a pet parent] about $1,500 to $2,000 [to mend]," she says. "This is really avoidable and it breaks our hearts. All it takes is one accident where your cat gets out the door and hit by a car, or your dog gets injured by another, and you might be facing euthanization rather than care and treatment, simply due to expenses."

Outside of pet insurance, it's also a good idea to have a small emergency fund set up for your pet, just in case. And as your pet ages, certainly you can reconsider your insurance coverage. You may decide that your pet doesn't need a high level of coverage or coverage at all as it enters its final stages of life, but that's a personal decision you'll have to make.

4. Good food and nutrition

Be mindful of your pet's diet, and don't skimp on their food. This doesn't mean following the latest fads or advertising. Consider your veterinarian's professional opinion and conduct your own research using authoritative sources.

"You cannot underestimate the value of good food and what this can do for your animal's long-term health and well-being," explains Thomas. "The ingredients and fillers in cheap pet food can actually cost you more in vet bills, trying to figure out why your pet's coat is really dry, coarse, or why your pet is super itchy or has skin issues. Ingredients like chicken and grains are the biggest culprits causing pet allergies, including skin and ear infections." (See also: 20 Most Useful Pet Food Websites)

5. Exercise and socialization

I'm a pretty lucky pet parent because there are plenty of dog parks, beaches, and even dog-friendly happy hours where I live that my best fur-buddy and I can go to socialize and get regular exercise, and it's all free (except for the beers, of course). This is probably the case for you as well (a quick search will find all the dog-friendly places in your vicinity), and it's important to utilize these community assets so your pet can make friends and play.

"While cats are often solitary animals, dogs thrive on social interaction; invest your time, effort, and resources into enriching your pet's daily life," Dr. Levy advises. "Both species need exercise to keep their bodies healthy. For cats, invest in toys and dedicate time to daily play. Dogs should not stay home alone while you are at work, so pony up for a walker or daycare."

6. Dog training, if needed

A lot of pet parents manage to raise friendly, gentle, loving dogs without the assistance of trainers. The problem is, you never really know how your pet will turn out as an adult based on your specific combination of nature and nurture, which makes it a good idea to invest in formal training.

Thomas says, "Many people rely on the breed of dog — 'good family dogs' — and think they don't need training, or think that hanging out with the family is actually socializing their dog. But investing in a better understanding of what training entails and how to communicate effectively with your dog, as well as how to truly socialize your dog, will be a priceless experience and can truly be the difference between keeping your dog or not. If people invested as much time and attention into these factors as they do researching a dog breed that will be perfect for them, they'd be more successful — and find many more dogs that would actually work for them."

Like this article? Those of us with pets get worried about keeping them from overheating, especially while we're at work. Here's how to keep your pets safe, healthy, and comfortably cool during a heat wave.

1. Prioritize hydration

During the rest of the year, just two or three water bowl changes is enough. But during the hot months, you'll not only want to refill regularly, but you should also consider adding bowls with cold water throughout the house, especially if you live in a large home. This will offer your pets easy access to hydration when the high temps make them sluggish.

2. Learn to spot heatstroke

One of the most important things to know is how to spot the signs of heatstroke in an animal. Are they panting or drooling a lot? Are their gums red? Get them a damp cloth, some cold water, and get them to a vet as soon as possible, as heatstroke can be deadly.

3. Create shade

Keeping the hot rays of light from shining down on your pet will help prevent them from overheating. It will also keep your indoor temperature down. Try closing the blinds and your curtains when the sun is out, especially when you are about to leave the house. Also ensure you have set up a shady area in your yard for outside time.

4. Trim, but don't shave

Worried all their fur is making them uncomfortably hot? Well, remember that dogs and cats have a special layer of insulating fur that not only keeps them warm during winter months and harsh weather, but also protects them from excess sun exposure and superficial injuries. Take them to the groomer to give them a cute summer haircut, but do not shave all the way to the skin. (See also: 6 Money Lessons You Can Learn From Your Pets)

5. Keep the A/C and fans running

You don't need to keep the A/C on for the entire house. Keep your pet's favorite spot cool with a portable air conditioning unit or simply a fan to keep the air circulating, so your beloved furry companion isn't languishing under sweaty, stagnant air.

6. Apply a damp cloth

If you notice your pet might be overheating, a fast way to get them cooled off is by applying a cool, damp cloth to their body, face, and paws. You might need to do this a handful of times throughout a hot day, but your pet will experience some instant relief.

7. Keep them indoors

Outdoor time is important for dogs, but make sure that when it's above 90 degrees, that they have plenty of time indoors. You know you have to do it, but the sweating and the sore muscles aren't always appealing. Luckily, there are ways to get your sweat on and actually enjoy yourself, especially if that workout allows you to hang with your favorite four-legged pet. If your love of fitness rivals your love of animals, check out these ways to integrate your two passions for a healthier and happier lifestyle.

1. Goat yoga

Goats are frickin' adorable, that we knew already. But they've probably never been more adorable than when they're acting as therapy animals in the hot new exercise trend sweeping the nation that combines goats and yoga. Lainey Morse, who created the Goat Yoga concept on her farm in western Oregon, has people clamoring to get into her classes, which are starting to expand across the country.

These classes progress as you might expect — humans move through yoga positions while the goats do whatever the heck they want, like jump on your back while you're in child's pose. Morse says the classes are helping people with anxiety and depression, but there are other mental and physical health benefits associated with this type of animal-assisted therapy, such as: reducing loneliness, lowering blood pressure, and diminishing overall pain. (See also: 5 Things Yoga Can Teach You About Money)

2. Horseback riding

If your fitness goals include abs of steel, hop on a horse. Riding equines requires a decent amount of core strength to stay balanced, and continued riding can improve posture in day-to-day activities. You'll develop better coordination, enhance muscle tone and flexibility (your inner thighs and pelvis get the biggest workout on a horse), and you'll also enjoy the meditative effects that come with focusing on the ride and staying on the horse. Giddy-up!

3. Tending to horses

If riding horses isn't your thing, then tending to horses can satisfy your urge to interact with the animals while staying fit. London-based Pilates educator Julie Driver — who uses the exercise system to enhance riders' skills — says that there are plenty of other ways to tone up in the company of mares and stallions.

Alongside the benefits of riding itself, Driver suggests these other activities to break a sweat.

Mucking out soiled bedding in the stables

You'll feel the burn in your biceps and forearms after wielding that pitchfork for a period of time.

Carrying straw bales

The average straw bale weighs between 35 and 55 pounds, so replacing the soiled straw that you removed while mucking out the stall will have you burning calories and using your upper body as you move the bales around.

Grooming your horse

Drive suggests using long sweeping strokes to really clean your horse and move your shoulders.

Filling and carrying water buckets

Bend your knees and pick up those buckets. Preferably one in each hand to make sure you're balanced.

"All these chores involve an increase in heart rate and aerobic activity with the added benefit of being in the fresh air and outside of a gym environment," adds Driver. They can all be done as an alternative to the gym, and you could even time yourself!"

4. Dog walking

If you want to keep things moving but not overexert yourself, dog walking may be the gig for you. It's easier than ever to pick up this side hustle that allows you to trot somebody else's pup around the neighborhood while getting paid for it. I offer my services on Rover.com (probably the most popular peer-to-peer pet service out there), which is primarily a dog-sitting service, but there is a walking component to it. Dog agility training

Plenty of dog moms and dads send their pups away to be professionally trained, but now there are programs available, like Thank Dog! Bootcamp, that offers integrated human and canine personal fitness so you and your pooch can get physically and mentally fit together. This particular program is only available in Tennessee and Ohio at the moment, but you may be able to find something similar in your area with a quick online search. (See also: 7 Ways to Get Fit With Your Dog)

6. Cat hiking

Mallory Crusta is the owner of Wildernesscat Natural Pet Care, a site dedicated to "providing natural health solutions for adventurous cats." She's also a supporter of "adventure cats," a social media-fueled phenomenon that has cats stepping outside of the home and exploring the great outdoors. While kayaking, sailing, camping, and even skiing with cats are all activities growing in popularity, hiking is one with real potential for improving your fitness.

"Of course, it's crucial that your cat is comfortable with a leash and harness long before you start exploring the local state park," Crusta adds. "Take a few test walks, first through your house, then in the backyard, to gradually acclimate your cat to the experience. It's also critical that your hiking cat is trained to come when called. Treats are often the key to training: use them to teach your cat to follow you."

7. Weightlifting for livestock

I have friends who raise chickens on their property and they can attest to the strength-training they receive by hauling around feed bags and maintaining the coops. "The Critter Lady" Kelly Meister-Yetter also told me about her three flightless domestic ducks living in her backyard, and just about every facet of their care involves weightlifting.

"Their bags of feed weigh 50 lbs, and the bales of straw I use in their pen weigh over 20 lbs — all of which must be moved from the back of my car to the shed in the backyard," she says.

8. Birding

Novice and veteran ornithologists (and just regular Joes who like watching birds) will reap the benefits of birding through improved cardiovascular health. Bird watchers sometimes walk many miles in search of their flighty subjects. You'll gain increased upper arm strength by holding binoculars and cameras for an extended period, and quick reflexes.

Like This Article? However, they can also leave stray hair, furniture damage, and other messes behind. Here's how you can keep your home beautiful even when you have a four-legged fur-baby shedding all over everything. (See also: 5 Pet Costs You Don't See Coming)

1. Opt for hard flooring

Install floors that can stand up to scratches and dirt. Hard flooring like vinyl, laminate, hardwood, and tile offer easy maintenance and pet cleanup, along with a great value over time. Ceramic tile is also great because it's particularly resistant to animal stains.

2. Choose the right carpet

Carpeting can be very difficult to clean, particularly with accidents and excessive hair. It can also harbor stains and make your pet allergies worse.

If you do decide on carpeting, look for a synthetic blend option with low pile that won’t absorb as much hair and is easier to vacuum. Also consider modular carpet tile or inexpensive rugs that can be easily picked up and cleaned or replaced.

3. Select washable fabrics and concealing patterns

Choose washable fabrics for cushion and pillow cases whenever possible so you can easily throw them in the washing machine. Fabrics with patterns can help camouflage old stains. Avoid tweed fabrics that can trap hair between the fibers.

Look for items in colors that match your pet's fur. For instance, you wouldn't want to purchase a black couch if you have a white cat; the stray pet hair would be abundantly obvious.

4. Use semi-gloss wall paint

Flat finish paint is nearly impossible to clean. Semi-gloss paint in satin or eggshell finishes is easy to wipe down, making it more pet-friendly.

5. Set up a pet station

Convert an area by the door into a pet station. This will be for hanging leashes, walking shoes, towels, doggy bags, and anything else you need to get your pet out the door quickly. This will also come in handy on a rainy or snowy day when you need to wipe your pet off before they run around the house with wet or dirty paws.

6. Hide the litter box

Hidden litter boxes look like an ordinary nightstand or planter on the outside, but have the litter box housed inside. Keep the litter box in a private area, away from feeding areas, so your pet can feel safe and comfortable.

Like this article? This can take a toll on any family's finances, which is why we've found some easy ways to save money at the vet, without compromising your pet's health.

1. Take advantage of preventive care

If your vet suggests preventive care services, such as heartworm prevention medication for example, consider how much you'll save with this affordable service, as opposed to what you would spend treating heartworm disease.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise, grooming, proper food portions, teeth brushing, and overall care. Severe dental issues can cost more than $1,000 to treat, so it's a preventive measure that shouldn't be skipped.

2. Prevent parasites

Get your animal on a flea and tick prevention program to keep fleas, ticks, lice, and worms at bay. These typically come in the form of a monthly pill, and many of these provide protection against several parasites at once. Along with saving you money on future treatments, this will also keep your pet healthy, happy, and comfortable.

3. Take advantage of free exams

Some veterinary offices or hospitals offer discounts or even free exams, to encourage owners to bring their pets in to treat for issues before they become hard to treat. Make inquiries with your local veterinary offices to see what they offer.

4. Compare prices

Compare service and prescription prices in your area before committing to one veterinary practice. Use online rating sites like Yelp to find a highly-reviewed vet that won't break the bank. Inquire about whether the office offers new pet or wellness care packages that can bundle exams and vaccines at a discount. (See also: 5 Unexpected Dog Costs You Should Prepare for Now)

5. Keep your pet's weight in check

According to The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, about 59 percent of cats and 54 percent of dogs in the U.S. are overweight or obese. Excess weight can lead to a host of health problems for animals. Keep your pet fit and active for a healthier lifestyle and fewer vet visits. Also, be aware of the ingredients in your pet's food. If you're trying to cut out processed food from your own diet, you should do the same for them. Look for food that promotes overall health for your pet's breed and dietary needs, and do not overfeed them.

And just because they adorably dance for treats doesn't mean you should keep handing them out!

6. Ask about financing

Many veterinary offices will offer financing, payment plans, or even discounts if you are upfront with them about any financial hardships you're facing. They might also work with a credit lender (like CareCredit), which allows you to pay the fees over the course of several months with no interest, upon credit approval. You can also look into private veterinary discount plans like PetAssure.

7. Get pet insurance immediately

Pet health insurance can save you a huge amount of money if your pet has costly medical expenses in the future. Keep in mind that pre-existing conditions and inherited disorders will not be covered, so it's important to get pet insurance as early as possible. Many policies will also limit coverage to one treatment per illness, so do your research to determine if it's right for you. (See also: Is Pet Health Insurance Worth It?)

8. Request an estimate before services are rendered

A written estimate will let you know how much you can expect to spend. Don't feel shy about saying "no" to a service or asking for a detailed explanation of the recommended services. If you think that a service is unnecessary or too expensive, visit another vet with your estimate in hand.

This article is from Andrea Cannon of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. They share our beds. We even buy them birthday presents. And though you might consider Fido to be a bona fide member of the family, the law has a different perspective. Your dog is your personal property — no different from your car or the silver china.

But unlike your other personal property, there's good reason to include your pet in your estate plan. Here's why your pet deserves a place in your will.

1. Your Pet Could End Up Lonely, Or Worse

Though pets have shorter life spans than people, many pet owners will die before their animals do. And those who fail to make arrangements for their furry friend's future care take on the risk that their beloved animal could be condemned to an ownerless life in an animal shelter — or worse. Often, pets without owners are euthanized when there are no immediate options to find them a new home.

2. You Can Designate Funds for Pet Care

Funding is optional, but a future pet care fund is recommended for pet owners who want to ensure that their pet receives a certain quality of care in the event that they're no longer around to see to it themselves. You can designate a fixed amount or a percentage of a bank account, insurance policy, retirement fund, or even a portion of the sale of a home.

If you do decide to designate funding for pet care, you need to figure out how much. Consider that pets are more expensive as they age. How long is your pet expected to live? Do you plan to compensate a person or organization to see your pet care wishes through, or are you only interested in setting aside funding for the actual pet care services?

It's also important to determine who or what organization will be in charge of the funds. In a pet trust, the person who manages the funds is called the trustee. It's smart to consider a backup trustee in case your first choice becomes unwilling or unable to do the job.

3. You Can Keep Bonded Pets Together

If you have multiple pets that were raised together or developed a close bond, you can save them from the emotional trauma of separation by including instructions to keep them together in your will.

4. You Can Name a Pet Guardian

Sometimes friends or family members vow to take in a cat or parrot in the event of a pet owner's death. Yet many of these informal promises, however well-intentioned, fail to play out as planned. This is why it's beneficial to designate a pet guardian.

A pet guardian is any person or organization who will become responsible for your pets and for the task of carrying out your pet care instructions. This can include the role of monitoring any funding set aside for pet care, or you may instead designate a completely different person or organization to assume the role of trustee. If a pet organization assumes the role of pet guardian, you should be sure to include directions about adoption. It's also vital that you research whether the pet organization has a fee for pet guardianship. If it does, you must factor in this fee when deciding how to disburse your funds.

5. You Can Name a Successor Pet Guardian

The goal is to ensure that your pet is cared for when you're no longer around to see to this end yourself. So it only makes sense that a successor pet guardian should be named to take the guardianship duties over in the event that your primary pet guardian becomes unable or unwilling to do the job.

6. A Cautionary Tale: Wild Wishes Could Be Ignored

The instructions you leave for the care of your pet should be sensible and legal. Just because you write it in your will doesn't necessarily mean it will be carried out. In fact, a will cannot enforce far-fetched demands when there's no one willing or legally able to uphold them. At its core, estate planning is solely intended to distribute property. Wild wishes can be ignored.

In perhaps the most extreme cautionary tale, billionaire real estate heiress Leona Helmsley famously left 12 million dollars for the care of her white Maltese, Trouble. "I direct that when my dog, Trouble, dies, her remains shall be buried next to my remains in the Helmsley mausoleum," Helmsley wrote in her will. But very few of the instructions she left in her will were followed. Millions of dollars that Helmsley intended to be spent on the dog went to other purposes because she never specified how all of the money should be spent, and the cemetery where Helmsley was buried refused to ignore a legal policy that forbids the interring of nonhuman remains at human cemeteries.

This article is from Brittany Lyte of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. According to research by a University of Scranton, Journal of Clinical Psychology study, only 8% of people who make New Year's resolutions actually achieve their goals. If you're like most people, your plans to go to the gym four times a week, stop wasting time on Facebook, and organize your entire home are probably going to fizzle before the end of January.

But there is someone in your life who can help you create achievable New Year's resolutions: your pet. What Fido and Fluffy want from you in 2017 are actually things that will help to make your life better. So forget the usual resolutions this year, and make some resolutions that will make your pet (and you!) happy:

1. Go On a Daily 30-Minute Walk

You know that Rover loves going on walks with you, but some days, it's all you can do to walk him around the block to his favorite fire hydrant. Especially in the winter, it can be very easy to hustle through a quick walk in the cold and head back inside to your laptop and Netflix.

But your pooch loves the daily exercise and stimulation that a long walk can offer — even in cold weather — and he's not able to understand your enthusiasm for binge-watching The Crown. A nice long walk is just what he wants, even when you want to curl up with a hot chocolate.

Of course, a daily 30-minute walk is literally just what the doctor ordered for you, too. Not only does a daily walk help you maintain (or lose) weight, but such moderate exercise helps to prevent and reduce the severity of chronic diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes. In addition, the exercise and the time outside can both help to improve your mood.

Rather than making a resolution to become a gym rat — and plunking down the gym's hefty joiner's fee and monthly membership fee — resolve to take Rover for a long walk every day, no matter the weather. You'll both be happier for it.

2. Take More Naps

Mittens may act aloof, but there is something she wishes you'd do more of: nap with her. Cats are notorious nappers (and cuddlers), and there is nothing more satisfying than taking a snooze with a purring kitty perched on your belly.

Of course, such naps are going to do more than just make your cat happy. They will also improve your health, your mood, and your level of self-control. According to a 2011 study by the Center for Disease Control, an estimated 50 to 70 million Americans are suffering from sleep deprivation. And being sleep deprived means that you are more vulnerable to chronic illnesses and more irritable, not to mention too mentally exhausted to avoid procrastination.

So this year, commit to curling up with your cat and catching 40 winks a couple of times a week. She'll love the closeness, and you'll reap the benefits of being well-rested.

3. Do Less

Having a full social calendar can be tough on your pets. They miss you terribly when you go out in the evening, especially if you are already working long hours. They would love nothing more than to have you home and available for tug-of-war, fetch, or belly rubs most nights.

It turns out that having a wall-to-wall schedule of events in your life isn't so great for you, either. According to Eldar Shafir and Sendhil Mullainathan, authors of the book Scarcity: The New Science of Having Less and How It Defines Our Lives, you're likely to make bad decisions if you have too little free time. Here's why: Managing your time is something like packing a suitcase. If you have an empty suitcase (or an empty schedule), it's easy to add something new. But if your suitcase or schedule is full, then you have to decide what to remove in order to add a new commitment, and that can be stressful.

The commitments that are most likely to come out of the "time suitcase" are the ones that don't feel urgent — like your commitment to spend time with your pets. But not only does spending time with your four-footed friends make them happier, it is also a great way to relieve your own stress. It is well documented that interaction with animals reduces tension and improves mood.

That's not to say that you should completely clear your social calendar so you can spend every moment with Buddy and Boots. But if you resolve to do less in 2017, you can take the time to determine whether you really want to say yes to the invitations that come your way. Then you'll only agree to the ones that you really want to do — and make yourself and your pets happier.

4. Clean More

Bandit can't get on his favorite spot on the sofa because the laundry basket is in the way. Cleo's litter box has gotten so ripe she's leaving "gifts" on the floor beside it. They may not be able to tell you in words (although your cat's method of protest can be pretty eloquent), but your pets would love it if your house were a little cleaner.

Tidying up would also offer a big benefit to you. According to Sherrie Bourg Carter, writing for Psychology Today, "Messy homes and work spaces leave us feeling anxious, helpless, and overwhelmed." Those piles of clothes and papers overwhelm our senses and make it difficult to truly relax. That can affect everything from your mood to your ability to sleep well at night.

Getting on a cleaning routine this year will not only help your pets to feel comfortable in your home, but it will help you feel better, too. And knowing that you can have unexpected guests drop by without worrying about the pet hair tumbleweed in the living room or the freshness of the litter box is an incredibly freeing sensation.

Listen to Your Pets

Resolutions are often grand promises to ourselves, but making small promises to our pets will actually lead to a better, healthier, and happier year. For 2017, resolve to get more purring and tail wagging from your pets, and you'll also reap the rewards for yourself.

This article is from Emily Guy Birken of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. But we all know that number goes right out the window if you're a fright-night fanatic. At least mine does — on candy and costume and festivities alone. Tack on decorations, greeting cards, and pet costumes to the list (the latter of which has become BIG business to the tune of $350 million a year), and you can easily spend $100 to $200 on Halloween — a hefty price tag for what's generally considered to be a "kid" holiday.

Ward off such wickedness this October 31 by checking your receipts for hidden spending gremlins.

1. Decorations

The National Retail Federation found that 70% of Halloween shoppers plan to purchase decorations, spending $2.4 billion, while 49% — likely many of the same respondents — say they'll decorate their homes or yards. This certainly can become problematic if you're buying new, full-price decorations to add to your collection every year, but there are ways to lessen the cost.

My method, for instance, is to buy new items postseason. I never purchase any holiday decorations, Halloween or otherwise, while the season is in full swing. Even if discounts are available (Target reels you in with discounts throughout the season on its Cartwheel app, for example), you'll pay a fraction of even those discounted prices if you wait until November 1 or a couple days after to snag what's left of the haul. Granted, you may not find high-end items like yard inflatables or animatronic monsters, but I'm usually able to add a few smaller decorations to my overall Halloween aesthetic. Outdoor holiday lights and party supplies also are in abundance on clearance the day after.

2. Greeting Cards

A whopping $390 million is spent on Halloween greeting cards every year, purchased by 35.4% of Halloween shoppers. This might not makes sense to some of you, but anybody who has children in their lives — specifically nieces, nephews, and grandchildren — will recognize how Hallmark and American Greetings continue to make a killing (mostly because of the guilt we feel for not actually being present to celebrate with them), especially when you consider that the average cost of greeting cards hovers around $5. In fact, I've known people who have spent upward of $18 on a single fancy greeting card; they've been drinking too much witches' brew, for sure.

I cut costs on greeting cards for my own nephews by either buying them a year in advance like I do decorations — and I've walked away with cards at a whopping 90% off the day after Halloween — or forgoing the card altogether. Because based on my own personal experience, I can absolutely confirm that children don't care about the card whatsoever when there's also candy in the package. Skip it and it'll never be missed.

3. Candy

Okay, now we're getting into serious Halloween territory. Candy — the crux of the entire bloody celebration — rakes in an incredible $2.5 billion in September and October alone, with 94.3% of consumers surveyed by the NRF breaking out their wallets for the sugary-sweet treats.

And it's not cheap. The average person will spend $24.43 on candy this year, which represents a big chunk of the total Halloween spend average of $82.93. It's easy to see how it gets there though. Premium chocolate brands, like Hershey's, Mars, M & M's, and Reese's, are priced between $10 and $12 per large bag featuring kids/snack size servings. I've seen the per-pound cost of some of these bags between $5 and $7, which is rather expensive for run-of-the-mill chocolate.

But therein lies your savings tip: Before I purchase any bag of candy, I compare the number of pieces in the bag/how much the bag weighs with the price-per-pound designation listed on the price tag on the store shelf. Most of them have these. While larger bags may seem like the best value, often the smaller bags are more economical, comparatively.

Let's not forget, either, that you're paying for packaging and holiday marketing when you buy holiday food/candy — the brands factor in the cost of unsold post-holiday items into the cost of the bag you're buying — which means that you'll save even more if you purchase the everyday bags in the regular candy aisle opposed to those in the seasonal food section. Of course, you can reduce the price even further with app savings and coupons.

4. Human Costumes

Outside of candy, the other major Halloween expense is costumes, which takes up the biggest portion of the holiday-spending pie at $3.1 billion.

When it comes to costumes, we're already fairly savvy: 35% of costume shoppers search for the perfect outfit online, where you can find great costumes at reasonable or even discounted prices, while 29% shop in store, likely at pop-up shops like Spirit Halloween Superstores. (I receive discounts galore at Halloween by being on their email list.)

What's even more heartening from a savings standpoint is that many of us rely on social media (34%), friend and family (19%), pop culture (16%), and print media (14%) for costume ideas, the pieces for which we look for in our own closets or thrift stores.

Again, I've saved a bundle picking up full costumes, odds and ends, and accessories after the holiday; Spirit goes out of business for the year, end of day November 1, but you can snag tons of great stuff that day. I keep all those items in a box to piece meal a costume together the next year.

Another smart idea is to swap costumes and accessories among friends. Somebody in your circle may have just what you're looking for — Facebook is an excellent way to find out — so you don't have to shell out for one-use-only items.

5. Pet Costumes

We love our pets. So much so that 20 million of us are willing to fork over a combined $350 million to dress up our furbabies as waggy-tailed ghouls and goblins.

I admit that I've dressed up my own dog for a celebration at the dog park or for a neighborhood parade, but I'll let you in on a little secret: He doesn't like it one bit. And it stands to reason that yours probably doesn't either. Which is why I don't do it anymore.

Even a discounted costume is a waste, in my opinion, because if the dog doesn't destroy it trying to get it off, it'll get filthy when your pet rolls around in the dirt and other dogs' poop in hopes of sending you a message to stop humiliating it in public. Thus, if you're looking to shave real money off your Halloween expenditures this year, cut out the pet costume altogether (or reuse the filthy one). No sleep will be lost, least of all by your slobbery companion.

This article is from Mikey Rox of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. Despite the problems we face, most of us would give anything to maximize longevity. Fortunately, there's plenty you can do to have a long, fulfilling life. Some things are fairly obvious, such as quitting a bad habit like smoking, and avoiding life-threatening behaviors. What you might not realize, however, is that certain purchases also have a hand in extending your lifespan. Here are eight things you can buy to help you live longer.

1. Books

After finishing high school or college, maybe you vowed never to pick up another book again. Reading was no doubt a grueling chore while you were cramming for an exam, but there are benefits to making reading a regular routine. According to a new study, reading can boost cognitive function, and people who read for at least 30 minutes a day can extend their lives and live two years longer than those who don't read.

2. A Cat

If you're thinking about getting a pet, don't automatically assume a dog is the better choice. Some cats aren't as social or playful as dogs. Nonetheless, owning a cat can be good for your heart and have a positive effect on your life. The National Health and Nutrition Examination study followed 4,500 men and women over a 20-year period. More than half of the participants owned a cat during their lives. The study found that people who never had a cat were 30% more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than those who had owned a cat.

3. Floss

Brushing your teeth at least two times a day contributes to oral health. But if you're looking to add years to your life, don't forget to floss. The American Dental Association recommends daily flossing, and for good reason. Flossing — which helps remove particles of food from places a toothbrush can't reach — can add as much as six years to your life. The benefits of flossing have recently been hotly debated, but not flossing increases the risk of gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). Gingivitis can lead to heart disease, stroke, and infection.

4. Sunscreen

Whether you're at the beach, an amusement park, driving in the car, or working in your garden, it's important to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays with sunscreen. Sunshine is an excellent source of vitamin D, but too much exposure can be deadly. Having more than five sunburns can double your risk for melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Therefore, always apply sunscreen before exposing your skin to the sun, and reapply as directed.

5. Coffee

You don't have to feel guilty about starting your morning with a cup of Joe. Coffee can provide a much-needed energy boost to get through the day, and it can help you live longer. Researchers found that coffee has antioxidants that protect our bodies from damage. The beverage can reduce the risk of cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and type 2 diabetes. But it's important to drink in moderation. Too much caffeine also increases blood pressure and can cause sleep problems.

6. Bike

One or more days a week, ride your bike to work or while running errands. And if you have a regular exercise routine, incorporate cycling a few days a week. Researchers have found a link between riding a bike and living longer. For every hour you bike, you can add one hour to your life.

7. Blood Pressure Monitor

You probably don't give your blood pressure a second thought — but you should. High blood pressure is a silent killer because it increases the risk of stroke and heart disease. Rather than wait for a health crisis to learn you have high blood pressure, invest in a blood pressure monitor and regularly check your levels to ensure they remain within a healthy range (less than 120/80 mm Hg).

Blood pressure can fluctuate throughout the day, and you may have higher than normal readings after exercising or eating. If your numbers are consistently high, talk to your doctor. With lifestyle changes or medication you can lower your blood pressure and reduce the risk of early death.

8. A Wedding Ring

Maybe you're happy living a bachelor or bachelorette life. Even so, there are benefits to tying the knot. Not only can you enjoy companionship, a study conducted by Duke University Medical Center found that people who never marry were "more than twice as likely to die early in life than those people in long-term, stable relationships." The study followed 4,800 people born in the 1940s. These findings support other studies, which found that married people had a lower risk of heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer.

Like this article?
