But there are some actions that actually hinder your buying power and cause you to overspend.

Here are five things you may be guilty of doing that prevent you from getting the best deal available.

1. Lack of Comparison Research

One of the biggest mistakes is not shopping around or doing research before making a purchase. Too many of us believe that the price displayed is the lowest available, but this isn't always the case. Sometimes stores will slash prices due to overstocked inventory, or a local region will be doing a promotion not offered anywhere else. It pays to take the time to research and comparison shop before making your final purchase.

2. Not Knowing Your Credit Score

Not knowing your credit score can greatly reduce how much your credit card limit will be, or how much you can apply for when taking out a personal loan. Your credit score is the most important number that financial institutions consider. In addition, you could qualify for a lower interest rate (or be stuck with a higher one) depending on your credit score. This could save (or cost) you hundreds of dollars in interest fees and charges.

3. Rushing Into a Buy

Consumers tend to spend more money when they need something in a hurry. Needing to buy something at the last minute isn't always avoidable, but strive to take your time, really evaluate whether or not you have to purchase this item right now, and wait for at least 24 hours to ensure you can find the best deal possible. Also abide by this 24-hour rule before buying something — if you forget about it the next day, it wasn't really worth buying in the first place.

4. Not Asking the Right Questions

As consumers, we often forget how a simple question can save us a good chunk of change. Much like price matching, simply negotiating for a better price will usually pay off. Sometimes stores will still take expired coupons, a cash payment for less instead of a card, or the manager may alert you to a holiday promotion coming up. Just ask.

5. Missing Out on Cash Back

Between cash back credit cards and cash back websites, there's no lack of opportunity for you to maximize your buying power by earning cash back on all your purchases. These simply allow you to get money back for doing the shopping you were already planning on doing. It's one extra step (going to the cash back site to go to the shopping site, or using the right credit card to make the purchase), but considering the savings, it's always worth it. With the right credit card, you can get up to 6% cash back on everyday purchases.

What's another way you increase your buying power to ensure the best deal?

This article is from Carrie Smith of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. As a matter of fact, that's exactly what the marketing geniuses at Amazon want you to do. They don't want you to compare prices with Walmart; instead they want you to perceive them as always having the lowest price.

They do this by pricing a few, popular items lower than Walmart does in an effort to build your perception of them as a low-price leader. By knowing which items undercut Walmart's pricing — and which don't — you can become a more informed shopper and save money in the process.

Items That Are Cheaper at Amazon

Spotting the loss leaders at Amazon is not hard. After all, they want you to find the lower prices for their marketing to work.

Items With a High Customer (Star) Rating

A recent study from Boomerang Commerce showed that, in an effort to be perceived as a low price leader, Amazon purposefully undercuts the Walmart price on products with a high star rating. (A high rating is anything over four stars.)

By analyzing millions of orders over the years, Amazon has realized that a great way to build loyal customers is to beat the competition on products that people are gobbling up due to the glowing opinions of fellow shoppers. Use this to your advantage by gravitating toward products with at least a four-star rating, especially when there are at least 50 reviews. It's a bit of a follower's mentality, but you'll find it really does hold true, especially when shopping for small electronics, toys, and video games.

Highly Visible Products

Another category of products that Amazon sells cheaper than Walmart is highly visible and popular items. In other words, items that have a lot of buzz around them and are often featured on the Amazon homepage or highlighted on specific product category pages. Again, the perception of having the lowest price means a lot to Amazon, so when a product has a lot of eyes on it, Amazon will tend to price it lower than Walmart. Examples of some popular and highly visible items that consistently beat Walmart include the popular Fitbit Charge Activity Wristband, Dyson vacuum cleaners, Keurig coffee makers, and the Jawbone Wireless Speaker.

Items That Are Bad Buys at Amazon

Amazon obviously can't undercut the Walmart price on every product. With Walmart's enormous buying power, and reputation for pressuring suppliers to lower prices, it simply can't be done. This means Amazon often raises the prices on other products to make up the difference. These "other products" are items that are not very glamorous in nature and tend to be more "needs" than "wants."

Consumer Electronic Add-Ons

If you score a great deal on a HDTV from Amazon, beware of add-ons like cables, wall mounts, and screen cleaners, as they're typically marked-up. Other examples of add-ons that can be marked up include things like a wireless mouse when buying a laptop, and a protective case or charging station for your new Kindle. In many cases, Amazon will try to pad their profits on these add-ons making them not such a great deal for shoppers.

Household Items

Amazon has the reputation of being up to 20% more expensive than Walmart when shopping for household items like laundry detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, and the like. While this margin is definitely getting smaller in recent years, you'll still typically end up paying more compared to Walmart and Costco. If you are going to shop for household items at Amazon, I highly recommend signing up for their Subscribe & Save program, which allows you to get items sent on a monthly schedule with free delivery. The best part is you'll get 15% off your total when you have at least five items in your monthly subscription plan. The extra 15% savings brings Amazon very close in price, or in many cases, under the Walmart price for identical products.

Clothing

The problem with buying brand name apparel from Amazon is they rarely mark down prices and seldom have coupons. You'll typically score a much better deal by shopping at discount clothing stores like TJ Maxx, Ross, and Marshalls.

Shoes

When shopping for brand name shoes, especially online, you'll find much better prices at websites like Shoebuy, 6PM.com, and ShoeMall. Not only do all three sites offer free shipping, but they also regularly have coupon codes in the 25% off range. For example, a new pair of top of the line women's New Balance 990V3 running shoes is selling for $149.95 at both Amazon and Shoebuy, with free shipping. But with a little digging, I found a 20% off coupon code for Shoebuy, bringing my total down to $119.96 — a price Amazon can't touch.

While having the perception of being a low price leader is something Amazon strives for, it's up to us, as smart consumers, to see through the charade and always do our due diligence when making significant purchases. This means always price comparing, looking for coupons that'll beat Amazon pricing, and understanding the types of products Amazon purposefully prices higher than the competition. Do that and you're guaranteed to always find the lowest price.

Have you noticed Amazon offering certain items cheaper than the competition?

Like this article? Many people have high-deductible health plans or consumer-directed health plans that come with high deductibles and high out-of-pocket expense caps, ranging from $1,250 (self-only) to $12,500 (family) in 2013. (See also: The Types of Insurance Plans)

According to a survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Education Research Trust, 19% of people with employer-sponsored plans have an HDHP with a savings option (HDHP/SO). That percentage is expected to grow as more employers shift to these plans or expand offerings to include them in benefit packages. You may be one of those people, or you may want to control expenses even if you are not directly responsible for paying medical bills.

But when consumers try to control costs, there's a problem — getting prices from providers can be difficult and time-consuming. And, unlike your mechanic, healthcare providers typically don't give cost estimates before proceeding with a diagnostic or treatment. Sure, you can see pricing after you use services and get a bill. But to control expenses, you need to know the price of office visits, screenings, tests, surgeries, medications, and more before receiving services.

Asking about pricing from providers, such as doctor’s offices, hospitals, and screening facilities, is a simple and straightforward tactic. Occasionally, that approach works. But in my experience, staff members are often elusive about prices. They act alternatively fearful, confused, and guarded, seeming scared of the possibility of dispensing inaccurate information, unsure about what price they should give (list price, negotiated price, or billed price, which may vary by insurance company and plan type), and defensive regarding the value of services being rendered.

Fortunately, price lists are becoming more commonplace. Here are resources with useful information.

Fair Health

Fair Health has a consumer cost lookup feature at its website, fairhealthconsumer.org. Enter your location and select a procedure to get an estimate of the initial charge, reimbursement, and out-of-pocket cost. Based on my experience, the results seem accurate. Note that you are limited to a certain number of searches.

Healthcare Blue Book

Among useful web resources for saving money on healthcare is Healthcare Blue Book. You can get price information plus guidelines on possible price variations throughout the country. Search results break out facility and professional fees when applicable.

Clear Health Costs

You can find general information on healthcare costs by state and city as well as the lowest and highest prices of certain services by providers in New York at Clear Health Costs. The site collects and shares prices provided by consumers.

Leslie’s List

Davis Liu, M.D., a practicing board-certified family physician pointed me to Leslie's List as a source of price information. Pricing is available for diagnostic testing services and prescriptions in Chicago and Dallas.

Health Warehouse

You can check out prices and order medications at healthwarehouse.com, a U.S.-based pharmacy mentioned by Dr. Liu in his book, "The Thrifty Patient: Vital Insider Tips to Staying Healthy and Saving Money."

Provider Websites

Some healthcare providers post price lists or ranges on their websites. You can see how much an office visit and strep test cost at Minute Clinic or the price of a colonoscopy at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Insurance Companies

My healthcare insurance company has a tool that allows me to look up prices for office visits, procedures, and other services. Results indicate a range of prices for negotiated rates and out-of-pocket costs (though this number does not include co-pay amounts).

These sites and others like them can help you to:

Plan your consumption of healthcare.

Set aside money in a Health Savings Account (HSA) if you have an HDHP or determine how much to save in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or a regular savings account even if you do not have an HDHP.

Determine the cost-benefit of a proposed procedure or treatment.

Compare costs at different providers.

Save money by choosing lower-cost providers if appropriate or negotiating a lower rate.

Have you consulted a price list for healthcare services?

This article is from Julie Rains of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. However, despite their market dominance, LCDs have yet to give plasma TVs their final death blow. And that's a good thing, because when it comes to pricing (specifically on 50" 1080p sets), plasma TVs trounce their LCD competitors.

In fact, in the past year, not once has a 52" LED-backlit LCD sold for less than a 50" plasma. (Due to the scarcity of 52" plasmas and the lack of 50" LCDs, we compared 50" plasmas to 52" LCDs.) Sure, you're getting 2" less screen real estate with the plasma set, so it's natural for them to be cheaper. But deals on 52" LED LCDs have remained in the $1,000+ range, whereas deals on 50" plasmas have for the most part remained under $800 — a significant amount of savings for losing just 2" of display. On the plus side, plasma TVs have consistently outperformed LCDs with regards to picture quality. They deliver deeper blacks and don't suffer from motion blurring. In fact, CNET's best HDTV of 2011 is a plasma TV. So as far as image quality is concerned, plasma reigns supreme.

Now for the bad news. Unlike today's razor-thin LCDs, plasma TVs are generally bulkier. They're also known for using more power than LCDs, although many of today's newer plasmas meet stricter Energy Star guidelines.

And while it's true that some manufacturers have pulled out of the plasma market, it's also true that many companies such as Panasonic and Samsung remain big proponents of plasma TVs, showcasing new models every year at the Consumer Electronics Show. So in the end, the only true con to plasma TVs is their slightly bulkier size.

What Prices and Features Can You Expect?

Today's plasmas pack the same features found in modern-day LCD TVs, like app store support, 3D processing, Netflix streaming, Internet access, and more. Plasmas with 720p resolution are roughly $100 cheaper than those with 1080p resolution. And for reference, July's best plasma deal came in at $770 for the 2011 Panasonic TCP50S30 1080p plasma with built-in WiFi.

As we approach Black Friday, we expect to see TV prices plummet across the board, but 50" plasma TVs in particular will reach astonishing lows as they try to beat April's all-time low ($599 at Fry's). Compare that to the best deal we've seen on a 52" LED LCD ($979 at BeachCamera via eBay Daily Deals), and you'll see where the real savings are.

Conclusion

If you're in the market for a big-screen TV, you'll get the most bang for you buck from a 50" plasma. Sure, LED-backlit LCDs are hot right now, and they might even look sleeker from a design perspective, but on average plasma TVs still outperform LCDs. And with their much lower price, there's simply no reason not to invest in them.

Ready to put this information to use? I’m a huge fan of their two biggest sites, BugMeNot (a way to bypass compulsory website registrations) and RetailMeNot (a vast coupon codes site). Now with BeatMyPrice, they’re turning competitive shopping and price comparison searches into a game. And we’re all winners.

BeatMyPrice has a fantastically simple home page. You just plug in the name of the product, the web address where you found it and the price it’s selling for. Seconds later, you receive results that are pulled not just from other search engines, but that users have submitted. And a “target price” sliding scale lets you adjust for the ideal amount you’d like to pay. Then, you click on the link and go shopping.

Sites like Google Shopping, Bizrate and MySimon are good, and Kaboodle is fun, too, but there are people out there who are the Einsteins of bargain shopping. They are the bloodhounds of the internet, and when they find a stellar deal, they can now pass it on quickly and effectively with a search-engine comparison site like BeatMyPrice.

Big question; does it work? Well, I’ve been trying it out for a month now and so far, it’s definitely had the best prices for products WHEN it was listed on the site. Right now, as it is in its infancy, you may not find a price for the item you’re looking for. It seems to be a lot of electronics and gadgets at the moment. But as the site grows in popularity, the product database will grow, too.

I did a search for a D-Link DGL-4300 wireless router. Using my usual fallback, Google Shopping, the cheapest price I found was at Walmart for $138.77. As I hate giving money to WalMart anyway, I was happy to use BeatMyPrice to find a better deal. And it found one. Big time. Amazon had the same router for $105.78, plus a $25 rebate and free shipping. Grand total - $80.78, some $57.99 cheaper than the best I could find on Google Shopping. I was impressed.

Give it a try. And if you actually find that you have the cheapest price, it will become the price to beat on the site and you can be happy knowing you have saved future shoppers a bunch of cash. OR even a little cash. Either way, this is a service I’ll be using a lot.

(Prices listed above correct at time of article publication)

This article is from Paul Michael of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
