But if you find a little extra cash, or are fortunate enough to be gifted some stock as a graduation gift, there are a number of great options that have a great track record of solid performance.

These are stocks that have rarely let investors down over the course of decades, and they often pay great dividends, too.

If there's a list of stocks that recent grads should consider owning, these 10 should be included.

Microsoft [Nasdaq: MSFT]

Bill Gates' old company made headlines recently when it bought the professional networking site LinkedIn. It's now a massively diverse tech firm with PCs, tablets and phones, software, and a popular video game system.

Coca-Cola [NYSE: KO]

Yes, we know that America is supposed to be moving away from sugary drinks. But this company has managed to sell a ton of Coke while diversifying its product line to include everything from Dasani water, to Powerade and Honest Tea. Coca-Cola shares have been in positive territory for eight straight years, and with a market cap of nearly $200 billion, it's likely a long-term winner.

Apple [Nasdaq: AAPL]

Shares of this technology company have dipped about 20% in the last year, but that's all the more reason to consider buying now. This is still one of the largest, most influential and inventive companies out there. Chances are, if you are a recent college grad, you use Apple products. So go with what you know, and reap the financial rewards. (Disclosure: I own some shares of Apple.)

Facebook [Nasdaq: FB]

Okay, full disclosure: I bought some shares of Facebook stock a while back, and I have no complaints. Shares are up more than 40% in the last year, as the company continues to bust through earnings predictions. Facebook has 1.65 billion active users, and the company could vault to new heights with recent investments into virtual reality. Social media may be a fad, but Facebook will be here to stay.

Procter and Gamble [NYSE: PG]

Do you wash your clothes and your dishes? Do you brush your teeth? Do you use paper towels? P&G sells products that people all over the world use every day. This is one of those stocks you can practically "set and forget" and see a very solid return nearly every year. A dividend yield of more than 3% doesn't hurt, either.

AT&T [NYSE: T]

Admittedly, this is not the most exciting stock in the universe. But it's reliable, with a good dividend and not much volatility. AT&T recently hit a 52-week high amid reports that it's bidding for some of Yahoo's assets. But any share growth is a bonus for this company that's now dishing out a 4.8% dividend yield. (Disclosure: I own shares of AT&T, gifted to me in the 1990s!)

Johnson & Johnson [NYSE: JNJ]

Like P&G, Johnson & Johnson is a dividend aristocrat, meaning that it has paid out and increased its dividend every year for 25 straight years. This is a big company that's neck deep in the growing health care sector, and it sells a lot of products, including shampoo, soap, and hand lotion, that people use all the time. JNJ shares are up 18% this year, and has had just 13 down years since 1975. A 2.7% dividend yield is also a selling point.

Wal-Mart [NYSE: WMT]

When you have revenue approaching half a trillion dollars (yes, trillion with a "t"), you are a company worth investing in. Wal-Mart does well when the economy is doing well and folks are spending money. Wal-Mart does well in slow economic times, when shoppers are looking for low prices. There is some concern about the long-term future of brick-and-mortar retail, but Wal-Mart right now has more than four times the revenue of Amazon.

Sysco Foods [NYSE: SYY]

If you've ever eaten at a restaurant, you've probably gotten food from Sysco. This is another dividend aristocrat that has seen shares rise 19% in 2016, while boasting a healthy dividend yield of 2.5%. It's been one of the most reliable stocks for decades, and people aren't going to stop eating at restaurants anytime soon.

Amazon [Nasdaq: AMZN]

The world's top online retailer can be frustrating, because founder and owner Jeff Bezos has always focused more on growing his company than worrying about profitability. Some shareholders got frustrated with Amazon and left last year, but now shares are up over $700, nearing an all-time high. In addition to massive online sales revenue, Amazon has made a killing from its web services subsidiary, which pulled in $604 million in profits last year. One of these days, all of Amazon's reinvestment will likely pay off with massive profits that will send shares to even bigger heights.

Have you ever been gifted (or given) shares? That movement can be exploited in the short-term, but it's usually not helpful for long-term investors. What's more, many of the most volatile investments haven't performed well, overall.

Here are 10 stocks that are among the most volatile in the market, based on a common measurement known as beta. Most of these firms have a beta higher than their industry's average. Generally speaking, any investment with a beta higher than 1.0 is considered more volatile than average.

1. SolarCity [NASDAQ: SCTY]

I'm personally a big fan of renewable energy, but it's hard to get a handle on this stock. That's because it seems very susceptible to any and all news related to green energy, and as a relatively new company, it gets big attention for nearly every deal it makes. SolarCity hit a 52-week high last September then dove to a year low within two months. Then came a gradual climb, followed by another big dip. Long-term investors are better off waiting for SolarCity to get established before jumping in.

2. Twitter [NYSE: TWTR]

Riding the ups and downs of this stock has been like being on a wooden coaster at Coney Island. Shares rose to new heights near $60 last fall, then fell 40%, then rebounded almost all the way back, only to fall to under $30 recently. On one hand, investors see the potential from Twitter's 300 million active users. But it's also clear the company hasn't entirely figured out its business plan. (Disclosure: I own some shares of Twitter.)

3. Keurig Green Mountain [NASDAQ: GMCR]

Those single serve coffee makers were a great invention, but Keurig has had a terrible year and has been one of the most volatile stocks for the last five, according to standard deviation measurements. Last November, shares were trading at $158, but now they are near $52. Investors have become skeptical of Keurig's new products, and the company's ability to hang with new competition.

4. Oil and Gas ETFs

With oil prices hammered down in the last year, energy-related stocks have also taken a beating. But they're not just down in value — they're also highly volatile. Check any list of the most volatile ETFs over the last three years, and you'll see numerous oil and gas ETFs, including Powershares S&P SmallCap Energy Portfolio and SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Equipment & Services ETF. Energy companies including Clayton Williams Energy and Carbo Ceramics are among the most volatile in the stock market.

5. S&P High Beta Portfolio [NYSE: SPHB]

This is an ETF that tracks the S&P 500 High Beta Index, which keeps tabs on the most volatile stocks in the market. As you can imagine, its price fluctuates wildly, making it a horribly impractical product for most long-term investors. Consider that 14% of this ETF's holdings are in the highly volatile oil and gas industry.

6. Alexion Pharmaceuticals [NASDAQ: ALXN]

What to make of a stock that goes from a 52-week low to a 52-week high within two months? What to make of a stock that pulls off such a swing twice in one year? Alexion has a beta figure of 1.28, which is 50% higher than the average in the biotech industry. Unless you are Nostradamus and can predict these swings, stay away.

7. TripAdvisor [NASDAQ: TRIP]

In the last year, few companies have been more volatile. The popular travel website has seen shares drop 21% in the last 52 weeks, but with wild swings during that time. Some investors may have done well with TripAdvisor stock, depending on when they sold. But trying to predict the ups and downs is a fool's game.

8. Zillow [NASDAQ: Z]

The provider of real estate information was trading at $148 about a year ago. Now shares are at $75 a piece. Investors have endured some big price swings in recent months, including a 14% single-day drop back in March. Zillow has a beta of 1.4, placing it in the top third of most volatile stocks in the tech industry.

9. Yelp [NYSE: YELP]

Shares of this online platform for business reviews have been less volatile this year than in years past, but that's only because they've steadily gone down. Shares have dropped more than 60% since a 52-week high last September.

10. Casino Stocks

Look to Las Vegas for some volatility. Wynn Resorts has been one of the more volatile stocks in the last three years, and shares are down more than 40% this year. Caesar's Entertainment has also been all over the place, trading at $17 last November and then dropping to $3.30 this past June. You may have better luck at the blackjack table than you would trying to anticipate the movements of these stocks.

Are you daring enough to invest in volatile shares like these? How have you done?

This article is from Tim Lemke of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. They want to form a relationship," said Lempert, editor of insider grocery journal The Lempert Report and SupermarketGuru.com.

That said, the grocery industry is a low-margin business, and the more stores can do to encourage customers to spend more, in the most profitable areas, the better. Brands, too, would like to influence your behavior. (See also: The One Tool That Ensures You Never Pay Too Much for Groceries)

So beware of these ways supermarkets and brands attempt to steer your cart — and your wallet.

1. The Fresh 'n' Fruity

"One reason the produce department is in the front of the store is, it's like aromatherapy. Great colors and fragrances put you in a better mood, so when you're going through the store, you're moving more slowly; you might notice more products," Lempert said.

How to Evade It

Sticking to a list can help you avoid being influenced by attempted mood control. To avoid feeling deprived, Lempert advises drawing a limited number of blanks at the bottom of the page, so you can add two or three impulse buys — but no more than you can afford.

2. The Endcap Game

As you turn toward the next aisle, you see a towering display of identical cereal boxes. Beware! This may not be what you think it is. "Most people think everything in that endcap is on sale. Only about half the time is it on sale," Lempert warns.

How to Evade It

"Look carefully at the sign that's there," Lempert said. If it doesn't specifically show a discount, it's full price.

3. The Stock-Up Stickup

Buy one get one free, three for $5, or the per-ounce savings of the jumbo vat of ketchup — these can be traps if they lead you down the path of buying more than you can use before the expiration date.

How to Evade It

"Make sure you buy something in an appropriate size to use," Lempert said. "They might have 64 oz. tomato juice on sale. You have tomato juice occasionally. You might be better off buying the smaller cans, even though they're more expensive (per serving)."

On the other hand, if you are sure you'll use the larger volume in a timely manner, go ahead and grab the deal. BOGOs tend to be the largest discounts you'll see on most products. Lempert has one more caveat for stock-up-and-savers.

"Check the per-unit price. Just because it's in a bigger package doesn't mean it's cheaper. Because of operational efficiencies, you might find a 16 oz. can is cheaper on a per-unit basis than a 40 oz. can." If the factories are configured to pump out more 16 oz. cans, those may be the best deal after all.

4. The Scratch and Dent

"A lot of stores have damaged packaged goods, usually by the meat department. Don't go for that," Lempert warned. "When you have a dented can, you can easily grow bacteria in that can. If it's a damaged package, I don't care how cheap it is, from a food safety standpoint, I won't go near it."

But feel free to pick up kitty litter from the scratch-and-dent bin. "If it's a nonconsumable, sure," Lempert said.

5. Checkout Coupons

Those little coupons that print out next to the register? You may notice that they bear an uncanny resemblance to items you just bought. This is because brands want to target certain customers and encourage them to try their product next time.

"Let's say you're a Coca-Cola drinker. Pepsi wants to steal you, so they'll give you a high-value coupon to encourage you to switch to Pepsi. Or Coke doesn't want you to leave, so they'll give you a Coke coupon," Lempert said.

These aren't necessarily insidious, and may even save you on things you want. But be aware, there's some psychological pressure being attempted here.

Saving Graces

Phil has a few more insider suggestions for saving at the super.

Try the House Specialty

One area where the store and shopper's interests align is the store brand. These products are often identical to name-brand products, sell for less money, and send more profit back to the store. So while the store may try to steer you to its house brand displays, it's not a trap.

"Remember that store brands always have a money back guarantee," Lempert said. "Compare the ingredients and nutritional information on the store brand to the brand you normally buy. If they're identical, it's probably an identical product."

Join the Club

Lempert advises shoppers to tap every tool available to save: coupons, online programs, and store cards. Don't be paranoid about the fact that the cards and apps help the store compile data on your shopping habits.

"There are no secrets in today's world. Everybody knows everything about us," Lempert said.

Well, at least now you also know a little bit more about the supermarket.

Have you fallen for any of these upsell traps? You find a deal now and then, but on the whole they really don’t give you great value for money. Farmer’s markets are good for deals and fresh produce, but they only appear once a week in my area. But for great produce any day of the week, at silly prices, my local Asian market is unbeatable.

I’m a huge fan of cuisines from all over the world, and I usually pop into my local Asian market for rice (20lbs for just $12.99), Aloe drinks, Kim Chee, dumplings, good soy sauce and some fresh pork buns; but this time my wife and I did a full shop there. And wow, what a difference.

Frugal Produce
For a start, the produce was outstanding. We found over six different types of plums, including Dragon Plums and a delicious mango/nectarine plum combination. We found so many fruits and vegetables we had never seen before, with wonderful smells and textures. And then, we saw the prices. A pound of Dragon Plums was just 79 cents! Regular black plums were $1.29/pound. And in Safeway, the same plums were over $3/pound. Big, big difference. We also found fresh ripe blueberries for 99 cents/pound, over four times less than in Safeway. Onions, potatoes, carrots, leeks, melons, broccoli, cabbage, they were all at least a third cheaper than Albertsons or Safeway. We were shocked. We filled up the cart.

Cheap Meat Treats
When we went onto the meat section, it was vast. Asian cooking is the ultimate in frugal food; no part of the animal is left behind, and as such, the variety on offer was mind-blowing (vegetarians, you may want to skip this next part).

I grew up on liver, steak and kidney pie and black pudding, so I’m all for different tastes (I’m a big fan of Bizarre Foods). A look around the meat and fish section left me wide-eyed. There were the usual cuts of meat, but there were also things I’d never seen in a regular grocery store, including duck heads and feet, fish roe, octopus, sea cucumber and so much more it would take a book to jot it all down. Again, the prices were way less than in our local Safeway and King Soopers, and all of this meat was freshly butchered and packaged in front of us.

Although not quite adventurous enough to cook duck’s heads, yet, we did appreciate the massive variety. And the freezer section was just as prolific. There were so many different types of frozen dumplings and buns that we didn’t know where to start. And there were a host of Asian ice-creams, alongside the usual Dreyer’s and Breyers.

More Savings
In the canned food aisles, we explored a host of amazing foods from around the world. We bagged authentic Ramen noodles and some great sauces and condiments. And we also grabbed some great drinks, including Mango Ramune.

When it came time to check out, our rickety old cart was straining under the weight. And the final tally for all of our 12 bags of groceries and fresh produce was just $120. We will of course be going there again. On the way out, I said that I was surprised more people don’t shop at their Asian markets. Luckily, this blog gives me the chance to get the word out. So go, check out what’s on offer at your local asian (or any ethnic market generally) and pick up some great food and supplies for much less than you’d pay at a chain supermarket.

This article is from Paul Michael of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
